Facial flushing in traditional Chinese medicine theory may be caused by factors such as liver yang hyperactivity, yin deficiency and excessive fire, insufficient qi and blood, external wind and heat, and emotional disorders. Traditional Chinese medicine believes that facial flushing is related to the imbalance of yin and yang in the body and the abnormal movement of qi and blood, which can be improved by means of traditional Chinese medicine conditioning, acupuncture and moxibustion, diet regulation, etc.

1. Hyperactivity of liver yang
Hyperactivity of liver yang is a common syndrome type in traditional Chinese medicine, often caused by long-term emotional disorders or liver and kidney yin deficiency leading to liver yang imbalance. Patients often experience symptoms such as dizziness, vertigo, tinnitus, and irritability in addition to facial infrared waves. The treatment mainly focuses on calming the liver and suppressing yang, and can use formulas such as Tianma Gouteng Granules and Zhengan Xifeng Decoction. Avoid emotional excitement in daily life and maintain sufficient sleep.
2. Yin deficiency and excessive fire
Yin deficiency and excessive fire refer to the internal generation of deficiency fire caused by insufficient Yin fluid in the body, which is common in people who stay up late for a long time or go through menopause. Manifested as afternoon hot flashes, five heart restlessness, and night sweats accompanied by facial flushing. Commonly used are Zhibai Dihuang Pills, Liuwei Dihuang Pills, etc., which nourish yin and reduce fire. It is recommended to eat more yin nourishing ingredients such as Tremella fuciformis and lilies, and avoid spicy and stimulating foods.
III. Deficiency of Qi and Blood
When Qi and blood are deficient, the face may experience paroxysmal flushing due to lack of nourishment, often accompanied by symptoms such as shortness of breath, fatigue, and palpitations. Traditional Chinese medicine commonly uses Qi tonifying and blood nourishing herbs such as Guipi Tang and Bazhen Granules. It is recommended to consume foods such as red dates and longan that nourish qi and blood, and to promote the circulation of qi and blood through moderate exercise.

4. External wind heat
When the pathogenic qi of external wind heat invades the muscle surface, facial redness and fever can be seen, often accompanied by sore throat, nasal congestion, and yellow nasal discharge. The treatment mainly focuses on dispelling wind and clearing heat, such as Yinqiao Jiedu tablets, Sangju Cold Granules, etc. During the onset of the disease, it is advisable to drink plenty of water and avoid exposure to wind and cold.
V. Emotional disorders
Traditional Chinese medicine believes that excessive emotions can turn into fire, and long-term anxiety and tension can easily lead to liver qi stagnation and fire, causing paroxysmal facial flushing. You can choose Xiaoyao Pill and Chaihu Shugan San to soothe the liver and relieve depression. Usually, emotions can be regulated through meditation, deep breathing, and other methods to avoid excessive mental tension. Traditional Chinese Medicine (TCM) treatment for facial flushing requires differentiation of symptoms and treatment. It is recommended to use medication under the guidance of a professional TCM practitioner. Daily attention should be paid to maintaining emotional stability, following a regular schedule, and avoiding excessive fatigue. Diet should be light and avoid spicy and hot foods. Moderate consumption of spleen strengthening ingredients such as lotus seeds and yams is recommended. It can be combined with facial acupoint massage, such as pressing the Yingxiang acupoint, temple, etc., to promote local blood and qi circulation. If the symptoms persist and do not improve or are accompanied by other discomforts, timely medical attention should be sought to clarify the diagnosis.
