Methods of Traditional Chinese Medicine for Treating Oral Ulcers

The traditional Chinese medicine treatment of oral ulcer mainly includes oral Chinese medicine, external Chinese medicine, acupuncture and moxibustion therapy, diet conditioning and emotional regulation. Oral ulcers in traditional Chinese medicine are often related to factors such as heat accumulation in the heart and spleen, yin deficiency and excessive fire, and damp heat in the spleen and stomach. Treatment should be based on syndrome differentiation.

1. Oral administration of traditional Chinese medicine

for heart and spleen heat accumulation syndrome can use modified Daochi San, which contains ingredients such as Rehmannia glutinosa, Houttuynia cordata, and bamboo leaves, which can help clear heat and eliminate fire. Zhibai Dihuang Pill is commonly used for Yin deficiency and Fire excess syndrome, containing Zhimu, Huangbai, Rehmannia glutinosa, etc., which can nourish yin and reduce fire. It is recommended to use Qingwei San for spleen stomach damp heat syndrome, which contains Huanglian, Shengma, Danggui, etc., and can clear heat and dampness. Medications should be prescribed by traditional Chinese medicine practitioners based on tongue and pulse differentiation, and self medication should be avoided.

2. Topical Chinese medicine

can be sprayed locally on ulcers with watermelon cream spray, containing ingredients such as watermelon cream and borax, which can reduce swelling and relieve pain. Ice boron powder contains ice flakes, cinnabar, etc., which can clear heat, detoxify, and promote wound healing. Honeysuckle decoction can be used to rinse the mouth or applied externally with tin powder, containing ingredients such as indigo naturalis and borneol, which have anti-inflammatory and muscle promoting effects. Topical medication should be repeated several times a day, and the mouth should be cleaned before use.

3. acupuncture and moxibustion therapy

Acupuncture at Hegu, Zusanli and other acupoints can regulate the movement of qi and blood. Heat accumulation in the heart and spleen can stimulate the Labor Palace and Shaofu, while excessive Yin deficiency and fire can stimulate the Taixi and Zhaohai. Ear acupuncture and acupressure of acupoints such as Shenmen should be applied several times a day. Acupuncture and moxibustion needs to be operated by professional doctors, and 10 times is a course of treatment.

4. Dietary regulation

Avoid spicy, stimulating, fried, and greasy foods to avoid exacerbating internal heat. Moderate consumption of heat clearing ingredients such as mung beans, lotus roots, lilies, or using light bamboo leaves and Ophiopogon japonicus as tea drinks. Those with weak spleen and stomach can choose yam and coix seed to cook Congee. Diet should be light and soft, with moderate temperature to reduce irritation.

5. Emotional regulation

Long term anxiety and tension can easily lead to liver depression and fire induced ulcers. Relaxation exercises such as Ba Duan Jin and Tai Chi can be used to regulate qi flow. Ensure sufficient sleep and avoid staying up late and damaging vaginal fluids. When emotions are not smooth, massage the Taichong acupoint to soothe the liver and relieve depression, and if necessary, use formulas such as Xiaoyao San to regulate. During traditional Chinese medicine treatment, it is necessary to maintain oral hygiene and rinse mouth with diluted salt water after meals. Avoid touching the ulcer surface with fingers or hard objects to prevent secondary infection. If the ulcer persists for more than two weeks or recurs, seek medical attention promptly to rule out systemic diseases such as Behcet's disease. Daily attention to balancing work and rest, regulating diet and daily routine can help prevent recurrence.
