Can high bilirubin levels cause skin itching

Elevated bilirubin levels may cause skin itching. Bilirubin is a product of hemoglobin breakdown. When its concentration increases in the blood, it may deposit on the skin and irritate nerve endings, causing itching. Mild elevation of physiological bilirubin usually does not cause significant itching, and is commonly seen in situations such as intense exercise, hunger, or physiological jaundice in newborns. This type of itching is mostly temporary and can be relieved on its own as bilirubin levels recover. Keeping the skin clean, avoiding scratching, and wearing loose cotton clothing can help alleviate discomfort. If accompanied by yellowing of white eyes and darkening of urine color, be alert to pathological factors. Pathological elevation of bilirubin is more likely to lead to stubborn itching, mainly seen in liver and gallbladder diseases such as viral hepatitis, bile duct stones, cirrhosis, etc. This type of disease can lead to metabolic disorders of bilirubin, causing conjugated bilirubin to reflux into the bloodstream. Itching often starts from the palms and soles of the feet, gradually spreading to the whole body, and worsens at night. The effectiveness of conventional anti itch drugs is limited. Cholestasis related liver disease, such as primary biliary cholangitis, can also present with skin jaundice, steatosis, and other symptoms. Some blood diseases, such as hemolytic anemia, may be accompanied by symptoms such as fever and lower back pain due to the excessive destruction of red blood cells leading to an increase in unconjugated bilirubin.

It is recommended to promptly check liver function, blood routine, and abdominal ultrasound when persistent skin itching accompanied by jaundice occurs. Avoid using bath products with excessive alkalinity, and the temperature of the bath water should not exceed 40 ℃. According to medical advice, Ursodeoxycholic acid capsules, Adenosine Methionine enteric coated tablets, etc. can be used to improve bile stasis, or topical calamine lotion can temporarily relieve symptoms. Daily abstinence from alcohol, low-fat diet, and regular monitoring of liver function changes are necessary.
