A woman's body, a man's gaze

Female body image anxiety is often associated with male gaze, a social psychological phenomenon that may affect women's self-awareness and behavioral patterns.

Male gaze refers to the phenomenon in social culture where the heterosexual male perspective is assumed as the aesthetic standard, which may be conveyed through media, social interaction, and other channels. Long term exposure to this environment may lead some women to overly focus on whether their appearance conforms to traditional aesthetics, resulting in body or appearance anxiety, and even behaviors such as dieting and excessive plastic surgery. In the workplace, being evaluated based on appearance may also distract attention from professional abilities. In rare cases, male gaze may evolve into sexual harassment or objectification behavior, causing psychological harm to women. Individual women may develop a tendency towards depression due to long-term suppression, or gain a sense of identity by excessively catering to external standards. In extreme cases, psychological disorders such as physical deformity disorder may occur, requiring professional psychological intervention.

It is recommended that women alleviate anxiety by establishing a diverse aesthetic perception and focusing on physical function rather than a single appearance standard. Mindfulness practice can help to accept oneself and seek psychological counseling if necessary. At the societal level, it is necessary to promote a cultural environment that respects individual differences and reduces excessive judgments about women's appearance. Male groups should also reflect on the impact of unconscious gaze behavior on others.
