Sand table psychotherapy is a nonverbal therapy method that uses sand tables, water, and miniature models for psychological intervention. It is mainly used for emotional counseling, trauma repair, and self exploration in children and adults. This therapy allows individuals to freely construct scenes in a sandbox, project their inner world, and help therapists identify psychological conflicts and guide healing. During the SEP treatment process, visitors use sand tools to create three-dimensional images in the sandbox, including elements such as characters, animals, and buildings, which often reflect subconscious content through concrete expressions. The touch of sand has a soothing effect, while the addition of water can regulate emotional intensity. Therapists analyze psychological states by observing the order of placement, spatial layout, and thematic changes. Common symbolic patterns include isolation, submergence, and accumulation, which may correspond to social avoidance, anxiety, or repression in reality. The sand table therapy is suitable for psychological and behavioral problems such as post-traumatic stress disorder, autism spectrum disorder, and attention deficit hyperactivity disorder, and is particularly effective for groups with limited language expression ability. In the initial stage of treatment, there is usually a chaotic scene, and as the course of treatment progresses, orderly expression will gradually appear. The entire process takes 8-12 times. The standard sand table size is 57 × 72 × 7 centimeters, using non-toxic dyed sand particles and equipped with over 1000 types of sand tools to meet the needs of different cultural backgrounds.

When conducting sand table therapy, it is necessary to maintain a safe and quiet environment to avoid evaluating the value of the work. Parents can record changes in the sand table when cooperating with children's treatment, but should not interfere with the creative process. Short term emotional fluctuations may occur after treatment, which is a normal healing response. It is recommended to choose therapists with registered qualifications from the Chinese Psychological Association to ensure professional intervention.
