Do I need to take off my glasses for a physical examination and MRI

Physical examination and MRI generally require taking off glasses. During MRI examination, metal objects may interfere with the magnetic field or pose safety hazards. Most glasses contain metal frames or lens coatings that need to be removed in advance.

Magnetic resonance imaging uses strong magnetic fields and radio frequency pulses to generate images of the internal structure of the human body. Metal substances may shift, heat up, or produce artifacts in the magnetic field. The frame of conventional glasses often contains metal components such as nickel and titanium, and some lens coatings may also contain trace amounts of metal particles. Before the examination, medical staff will ask the patient to remove all metal items from their body, including glasses, jewelry, belts, etc. Some non-metallic glasses made of special materials may be allowed to be worn, but their safety must be confirmed by the equipment operator. In rare cases, when patients rely on glasses due to visual impairment, they can inform the doctor in advance. Medical institutions may provide temporary alternatives to plastic eyeglass frames or arrange staff to assist in locating them throughout the process. For special populations who have implanted metal medical devices such as pacemakers and cochlear implants, magnetic resonance imaging (MRI) examination is absolutely contraindicated and should be replaced with other imaging examinations.

It is recommended to replace cotton clothing without metal zippers before inspection, and remove all cosmetics and bra hoops. Maintain a stationary posture during the inspection process and follow the breathing rhythm indicated by the equipment. If you have undergone orthopedic surgery or have metal implants in your body, you must proactively explain the specific situation to the doctor.
