Can Yangmei be eaten without washing

Yangmei is usually not recommended to be eaten without washing, as there may be risks of pesticide residues or microbial contamination. Yangmei's surface is prone to dust, insect eggs, and bacteria, and direct consumption may cause gastrointestinal discomfort. During the planting process of Yangmei, pesticides may be used to control pests and diseases, even if there are still some residues after harvesting. The folds of the fruit peel are prone to hiding dirt, and rinsing with clean water can remove most of the surface pollutants. Rubbing with running water for more than 30 seconds can effectively reduce the risk, and if necessary, soaking in diluted salt water for 5 minutes can help with sterilization. During the mature season of Yangmei, the humidity is relatively high, and the fruit is prone to mold growth. It is safer to consume after cleaning. A few orchards use organic cultivation and professionally cleaned Yangmei harvested, which can theoretically be consumed directly. However, there may be secondary pollution during the transportation and storage of commercially available waxberries, and the cleanliness level cannot be judged by the naked eye. Some people have weak gastrointestinal function and may experience abdominal pain after consuming unwashed waxberries. The concave part of Yangmei fruit stem is prone to accumulating pollutants, and simple wiping cannot thoroughly clean it.

It is recommended to use fruit and vegetable cleaning agents to assist in cleaning before consuming Yangmei, which can effectively remove fruit wax and fat soluble pesticides. Children and immunocompromised individuals should ensure that waxberries are thoroughly washed and can be peeled for consumption to reduce risk. Yangmei should not be washed with hot water to avoid damaging vitamin C. After washing, the water should be drained to prevent spoilage. If fermented or moldy Yangmei is found, it should be discarded immediately to avoid food poisoning caused by consuming spoiled fruit.
