Can I have a physical examination when my period comes

Routine physical examinations can generally be conducted during menstruation, but gynecological examinations and urine tests should be avoided. Menstruation may affect the accuracy of some physical examination results, such as hemoglobin and hematocrit in blood routine. Routine physical examination items such as blood pressure measurement, electrocardiogram, chest X-ray, liver function test, etc. are usually not affected during menstruation. White blood cell count may slightly increase during blood routine examination, but it is still within an acceptable range. Blood biochemical tests such as blood glucose, blood lipids, renal function, and other indicators are basically not affected by the menstrual cycle. Non pelvic examinations such as abdominal ultrasound and thyroid ultrasound can be performed normally during ultrasound examination.

Special attention should be paid to avoiding gynecological examinations during menstruation. Gynecological ultrasound may affect image quality due to uterine bleeding, and cervical smear examination may be mixed with menstrual blood to interfere with result judgment. Urine routine examination is prone to false positive occult blood due to menstrual blood contamination. It is recommended to perform it 3 days after the end of menstruation. Hormone level checks need to be scheduled according to specific times of the menstrual cycle, such as the six sex hormones usually being tested on the 2nd to 4th day of menstruation. Before the physical examination, the doctor should be informed that they are currently in their menstrual period, and the doctor will adjust the examination items according to the specific situation. It is recommended to choose the 3-5 days with less menstrual flow for menstrual examination, and wear loose clothing for easy examination. Maintain sufficient sleep before the examination, avoid vigorous exercise and excessive fatigue. On the day of the physical examination, normal diet and water can be consumed, but items that require fasting still need to be fasted for 8 hours as required. If an extension of the examination is required, the time should be adjusted in consultation with the medical examination center.
