Can I have a physical examination during my menstrual period

Regular physical examinations can generally be conducted during menstruation, but some examination items may be affected and need to be avoided during menstruation. Physical examination usually includes blood routine, urine routine, gynecological examination and other items, and menstruation may interfere with the accuracy of some results.

Blood routine examination is usually not affected during menstruation and can be performed normally. Hemoglobin and other indicators may fluctuate slightly due to menstrual bleeding, but generally do not exceed the normal range. Biochemical tests such as liver function, kidney function, blood glucose and lipid levels can also be completed as usual. Electrocardiogram, chest X-ray, abdominal ultrasound and other imaging examinations are not directly related to the menstrual cycle, and the reliability of menstrual examination results is relatively high.

Urine routine examination is recommended to avoid menstruation, as menstrual blood may contaminate urine samples and lead to false positive occult blood. Gynecological examinations such as cervical smears and vaginal colposcopy should be performed 3-7 days after menstruation, as an open cervix during menstruation can increase the risk of infection. The testing of six reproductive hormones, including sex hormones, needs to be arranged according to the specific time of the menstrual cycle, with 2-5 days outside the menstrual period being more accurate. Mammography may affect the comfort of the examination due to breast swelling and pain during menstruation. Before the physical examination, the doctor should be informed proactively that they are currently in their menstrual period, and the examination plan should be evaluated and adjusted by professionals. Special attention should be paid to perineal hygiene during menstrual check ups, and blood should be drawn immediately after intense exercise. It is recommended to wear loose clothing for easy inspection and to bring hygiene products for timely replacement. If abnormal items need to be rechecked, they can be retested 3-5 days after the end of menstruation. After the physical examination, maintain sufficient rest and increase the intake of iron containing foods to supplement menstrual nutrition.
