What should be used to wash apples to remove wax

The wax on the surface of apples can be removed by cleaning with warm water, salt, baking soda, white vinegar, or fruit and vegetable cleaner. Apple waxing is divided into natural fruit wax and artificial edible wax. Proper cleaning can effectively reduce wax residue.

1. Rinse with Warm Water

Rinse the surface of apples with flowing warm water at 40-50 ℃, and gently rub with your hands to dissolve some wax. Natural fruit wax is more prone to softening and peeling in warm environments. This method is suitable for treating apples without artificial wax, and it is recommended to rinse for at least 30 seconds.

2. Rub with salt

Take a small amount of salt and sprinkle it evenly on the moist surface of the apple. Use your fingertips to gently rub in a circular motion for 20 seconds. The micro particle structure of salt particles can increase friction and help peel off the wax layer. After completion, rinse with running water. This method has a better cleaning effect on artificial wax than natural fruit wax.

3. Soak in Baking Soda

Dissolve one spoonful of baking soda in 500 milliliters of water and soak the apple for 5 minutes. The weak alkalinity of baking soda can decompose ester components in wax, especially for industrial insect wax. After soaking, gently brush the surface depressions with a soft bristled brush to avoid pesticide residues.

4. Wipe with white vinegar

Soak kitchen paper in white vinegar and directly wipe the apple skin. Acetic acid can damage the molecular structure of wax. For waxing apples with high glossiness, it is recommended to dilute them with vinegar water in a ratio of 1:3 before use. After wiping, let them stand for 2 minutes before rinsing to avoid residual vinegar flavor affecting the taste.

5. Fruit and vegetable cleaner

Select a specialized fruit and vegetable cleaner labeled as wax remover and prepare it into a solution according to the instructions. This type of cleaning agent contains surfactants that can emulsify wax and have a high removal rate for food grade palm wax. Rinse with plenty of water after use to prevent chemical residues.

It is recommended to peel the cleaned apples for safer consumption, especially for children or people with weak digestive function. Although natural fruit wax is harmless, it may adsorb environmental pollutants, and excessive intake of artificial wax may affect gastrointestinal function. When storing daily, you can first wrap it in a breathable fruit and vegetable bag and then refrigerate it to avoid secondary pollution. If you find that the surface of the apple has a sticky feeling or abnormal reflection, it is recommended to extend the cleaning time or peel it. For people with chronic gastritis or irritable bowel syndrome, thoroughly removing wax before consumption can help reduce gastrointestinal irritation.
