What's wrong with a cold and lower back pain

A cold waist pain may be related to factors such as wind and cold invasion, poor qi and blood circulation, lumbar muscle strain, lumbar spine lesions, and kidney yang deficiency. It can be relieved through methods such as hot compress to drive away cold, moxibustion to warm meridians, medication regulation, massage to relax muscles, and strengthening warmth retention.

1. Wind cold invasion

After catching a cold in the waist, wind cold evil qi invades the meridians, causing local stagnation of qi and blood. Manifested as cold pain and stiffness in the waist, reduced when exposed to heat, and aggravated when exposed to cold. You can use ginger brown sugar water to perspire and dissipate cold, or use traditional Chinese patent medicines and simple preparations such as Fenghan Bitong Capsule, Zhuifengtougu Pill, etc. according to the doctor's advice. Daily attention should be paid to avoiding direct air conditioning or exposure to rain and humidity.

2. Poor Qi and Blood Flow

Cold induced constriction can cause constriction of the blood vessels in the lumbar muscles, obstructing blood circulation. Common soreness persists and there is a nodular sensation when pressed. It is recommended to use infrared therapy lamps for irradiation, or to use blood activating herbs such as Angelica sinensis and Chuanxiong for hot compress. You can follow the doctor's advice to choose drugs such as Shujin Huoxue tablets and Huoxue Zhitong capsules.

3. Lumbar muscle strain

Patients with pre-existing lumbar muscle strain experience worsening symptoms after catching a cold, with pain mostly concentrated on both sides of the spine. During the acute phase, hot compress with a hot water bag for 20 minutes can be used, combined with external application of dog skin plaster. Chronic strain injury patients can choose drugs such as Zhuangyao Jianshen Wan and Yaotongning Capsules for isothermal tonifying of kidney yang.

4. Lumbar spine lesions

Patients with lumbar disc herniation or bone hyperplasia are prone to nerve root edema after being exposed to cold. Pain often radiates to the buttocks, accompanied by numbness in the lower limbs. Timely medical examination is necessary, and in the acute phase, the use of Yaotongning capsules combined with mecobalamin tablets can be used for short-term nerve nutrition.

5. Kidney yang deficiency and decline

Patients with insufficient kidney yang experience a loss of warmth in the waist and abdomen, and pain upon exposure to cold, which worsens with prolonged standing. Accompanied by chills, cold limbs, and frequent nocturia. Suggest moxibustion at the Mingmen and Shenshu acupoints, and daily consumption of lamb and walnuts as warm tonics. You can follow the doctor's advice to take Jin Kui Shen Qi Wan and You Gui Wan isothermal kidney tonifying Yang preparations.

Daily attention should be paid to keeping the waist warm, wearing waist protection during sleep, and avoiding prolonged sitting in wetlands. In winter, you can wear mugwort waist protection patches for continuous warm compress, and practice the Eight Section Brocade "Two Hand Climbing Foot Strengthening Kidney and Waist" movement appropriately. If the pain persists for 3 days without relief or if lower limb radiating pain occurs, it is necessary to promptly investigate lumbar organic lesions. In terms of diet, avoid raw and cold foods. Eat more spleen and kidney strengthening ingredients such as yam and black beans, and soak your feet in Sichuan pepper water to promote blood circulation.
