What's the reason for grapes being so sweet

The sweetness of grapes is usually related to factors such as variety characteristics, maturity, planting conditions, and may also result in sugar concentration due to improper storage.

Grape variety is a key factor affecting sweetness, and some varieties such as Sunshine Rose and Jufeng are naturally high in sugar content. Grapes with high maturity will accumulate more sugar, especially when planted in areas with large temperature differences between day and night. The sugar produced by photosynthesis is not easily consumed, and the sweetness will be significantly increased. Overfertilization, especially excessive potassium fertilizer, can also promote glucose accumulation, and some fruit farmers may use plant growth regulators to increase sweetness. High storage temperature or poor ventilation after harvesting may cause water evaporation and increase sugar concentration. In some cases, grape infection with noble rot fungi can decompose acidic substances, making the sweetness more prominent but may be accompanied by off flavors.

The sweetness to bitterness of some grapes may be related to the hybrid characteristics of the variety, such as the presence of special aromatic substances in some musk grape hybrid varieties. The abnormally high sweetness may also be due to illegal additives such as saccharin sprayed before harvesting, as these grapes are often unnaturally sweet and have a bitter aftertaste. People with diabetes need to be cautious when eating high sweet grapes, which may cause blood sugar fluctuations. Excessive consumption of high sweetness grapes by children may affect taste development and increase the risk of dental caries.

When selecting grapes, observe whether the distribution of fruit powder is uniform, gently pinch the fruit to ensure elasticity, and avoid choosing grapes with sticky skin or brown stems. Soaking in light salt water before consumption can help remove surface residues, and different varieties of grapes can be paired with nuts or dairy products to balance blood sugar reactions. People with high blood sugar are recommended to consume small amounts between meals and correspondingly reduce their intake of staple foods. When storing grapes, keep the stems and wrap them in plastic wrap for refrigeration, and consume them as soon as possible.
