What kind of shell is good for buying walnuts

It is better to choose walnuts with a hard and intact shell, clear and uniform patterns. High quality walnuts are mainly characterized by intact shells, natural and uniform colors, heavy hand feel, no sound when shaken, and a fragrant and moldy smell.

1. The intact shell can effectively protect walnut kernels from external pollution and oxidation. When selecting, observe whether the shell has cracks, insect eyes, or mechanical damage. Damaged shells may lead to internal oil spoilage or mold growth. Gently pressing the outer shell should feel hard, while a soft shell may indicate prolonged storage or moisture deterioration.

2. Natural and uniform color

Fresh walnut shells are light brown or yellow brown in color, with a natural transition in color. Avoid choosing walnuts that are too white or black in color, as abnormal colors may have been bleached or stored improperly. The color of aged walnut shells will gradually darken, but there should be no obvious patches or color differences.

3. Heavy texture

The heavier the walnut of the same size, the fuller the kernels. You can weigh walnuts in your palm, high-quality walnuts will have a noticeable drooping sensation. Being too light in weight may result in internal moisture loss due to prolonged storage time, or cause the kernels to dry out due to poor development.

Fourth, there should be no sound when shaking

Hold the walnut and gently shake it, there should be no obvious sound inside. The tight fit between the kernel and the shell is a reflection of freshness. If you hear the sound of the kernel colliding, it may indicate that it has dried and shrunk. However, some thin shell varieties may make slight noises due to their structural characteristics, which need to be judged in conjunction with other features.

Fifth, the scent is fragrant and free of mold.

Fresh walnuts have a woody fragrance, and a moldy or crackly taste indicates spoilage. Walnuts can be lightly sniffed at the tip of the nose. If there is a pungent odor or fuel consumption smell, they should not be purchased. The scent of shelled walnuts should be more subtle than that of shelled walnuts, and overly strong aromas may have been artificially enhanced. When storing walnuts, they should be kept dry and ventilated. After removing the shell, it is recommended to seal and refrigerate. The recommended daily intake is 20-30 grams, as excessive intake may cause gastrointestinal discomfort. Walnuts are rich in unsaturated fatty acids and vitamin E, making them suitable as a healthy snack. However, people with allergies should be cautious when consuming them for the first time. When purchasing, priority should be given to choosing seasonal new products to avoid purchasing products that are loose and exposed to air for a long time. If mold spots or bitterness are found on the surface of walnut kernels, they should be immediately stopped from consumption.
