Apple home storage can be extended by methods such as refrigeration, ventilation and light avoidance, separate storage, humidity control, and avoiding squeezing.
1. refrigerated storage
Mature apples are suitable for storage in the refrigeration layer of a 0-4 ℃ refrigerator, as low temperatures can inhibit ethylene release and microbial activity. Immature apples should be left at room temperature for 2-3 days before refrigeration. Before refrigeration, wrap them in a plastic bag to prevent moisture loss and be careful not to come into contact with the back wall of the refrigerator to avoid frostbite. Refrigerate and store for 2-4 weeks. Regularly check and remove spoiled fruits.
2. Ventilation and light avoidance
Short term storage can choose a cool and ventilated storage rack or cardboard box, with a temperature maintained at 10-15 ℃. Pack in breathable bamboo baskets or perforated paper bags to avoid direct sunlight that may cause wrinkles on the skin. The relative humidity of the storage environment should be controlled at 85% -90%. If the humidity is too high, it is prone to decay, and if it is too low, it is prone to water loss. This method is suitable for storing apples that can be consumed within 1-2 weeks.
3. Store apples separately.
Apples release ethylene to accelerate the ripening of other fruits and vegetables, and should be placed separately from ethylene sensitive foods such as bananas and kiwis. It is also recommended to store different varieties of apples separately. Early maturing varieties such as Gala fruit have a shorter shelf life and should be consumed first. Place absorbent paper or sawdust inside the storage container to absorb excess moisture, and use corrugated paper to separate each layer of apples to reduce collisions.
4. Control humidity
When storing in basements or cellars, a hygrometer can be used to monitor the environment. If the humidity is too low, a water basin can be placed to increase the humidity, and if it is too high, quicklime can be added to absorb moisture. Apples with stems are more durable for storage. Before storage, check if the stems are intact and remove fruits with mechanical damage or insect eyes. When storing in bulk, flip it once a month and clean the rotten fruits in a timely manner to prevent cross infection.
5. Avoid squeezing
Adopt a layered placement method to reduce stacking pressure, and single-layer storage has the best effect. Foam net cover shall be used to protect fruits during transportation, and old newspapers can be used for household storage one by one. The storage container should not be too full, and one-third of the space should be reserved to ensure air circulation. Avoid storing near radiators in winter, as drastic temperature changes can accelerate fruit softening.
Regularly check the condition of apples during storage. If there is a smell of alcohol or local browning, it should be dealt with immediately. Soaking apples in salt water before consumption can remove surface wax, and storing them at room temperature for 1 hour after refrigeration will improve their taste. Eating apples in combination with oats and yogurt can delay the rise of blood sugar, and the rotten part needs to be cut off at least 1 centimeter of intact fruit flesh before consumption. The storage period of different varieties varies greatly, and late maturing varieties such as Fuji can be stored for up to 3 months. It is recommended to purchase in batches according to the actual consumption plan.
