The method of treating internal hemorrhoids with purslane

Purslane can be used to assist in relieving symptoms of internal hemorrhoids. Common methods include boiling water for sitz baths, crushing and applying externally, and combining with medicine. Purslane has a cold and sour nature, with the effects of clearing heat, detoxifying, cooling blood, and stopping bleeding. It has a certain relieving effect on swelling, pain, and bleeding caused by damp heat type internal hemorrhoids.

1. Take 60 grams of fresh purslane or 30 grams of dried purslane, boil it in water, and simmer on low heat for 15 minutes. Filter out the medicine and pour it into a basin when the temperature drops to around 40 degrees Celsius. Sit for 10-15 minutes. It can be repeated 1-2 times a day to relieve anal burning sensation and local congestion. Be aware that excessive water temperature may worsen mucosal damage, and the affected area should be kept dry and clean after sitz baths.

2. Crush and apply externally

Wash and mash fresh purslane into a paste, apply directly to the affected area of the anus, fix with gauze and keep for 20 minutes. Its mucous components can form a protective film, reduce friction and irritation, and contain flavonoids that can help contract blood vessels. People with sensitive skin should try it on a small scale first, and stop immediately if itching, redness, and swelling occur.

3. Compatibility as medicine

Portulaca oleracea is often combined with Eucommia ulmoides, Sophora japonica, and other herbs to make compound preparations, such as hemorrhoid suppositories or ointments. Its tannin components can synergistically enhance the astringent and hemostatic effects, but should be used under the guidance of a traditional Chinese medicine practitioner. Pregnant women and those with spleen and stomach deficiency cold should use with caution, as it may cause adverse reactions such as diarrhea.

4. Internal use conditioning

Fresh purslane 100g boiled water for cold dressing or Congee cooking, suitable for patients with positive symptoms of bloody stool and swollen anus. Long term constipation patients can pair it with Cassia seed tea drinks, and those with weak and cold constitution need to add ginger to mix. During oral administration, avoid spicy and greasy foods, and continuous use should not exceed two weeks.

5. Combination therapy

is more effective when combined with rectal exercises and acupoint massage, and can be applied to the Chengshan and Changqiang acupoints. Severe prolapse or thrombotic hemorrhoids should be treated with Western medicine, and purslane should only be used as an adjuvant. During treatment, it is necessary to avoid prolonged sitting and standing, and consume sufficient dietary fiber daily.

When using purslane to regulate internal hemorrhoids, it is necessary to treat them based on syndrome differentiation. Patients with damp heat type show better results when there is burning pain in the anus and fresh blood in the stool, while those with qi deficiency and sinking type hemorrhoid prolapse need to be combined with tonifying Chinese herbal medicine. Daily attention should be paid to maintaining regular bowel habits, avoiding using force to use the toilet, and consuming moisturizing foods such as black sesame seeds and figs appropriately. If rectal bleeding persists for more than a week or is accompanied by severe pain, seek medical attention promptly to rule out other anal and rectal diseases.
