The best way to peel grapefruit

The convenient method of peeling pomelos is to cut the top and separate the slices, balancing the integrity of the fruit flesh and operational efficiency. There are mainly five methods: top ring cutting method, cross sectioning method, spoon digging core removal method, segmented peeling method, and half digging method.

First, Top Ring Cutting Method

Use a knife to horizontally cut off the outer skin of the grapefruit, which is about 2 centimeters thick at the top, exposing the white sponge layer inside. Make 6-8 equidistant knife marks vertically downward along the edge of the incision, with the depth preferably just touching the flesh. Insert your fingers into the knife mark and fold it outward to separate the thick skin into petal shaped strips. This method is suitable for thick skinned varieties and can prevent juice splashing.

2. Cross sectioning method

Cut the grapefruit waist horizontally and vertically to form a cross opening, with a depth not exceeding 1 centimeter. Grasp both sides of the incision with both hands and spread it outwards, and the fruit will naturally split into four petals. Tear open the inner membrane from the top of each petal to take the meat, and the separated fruit petals are suitable for making fruit platters or sharing directly for consumption.

3. Scoop out the core method

Cut the grapefruit horizontally in half, use an arc-shaped spoon to rotate and dig along the connection between the flesh and the central axis, and completely remove the cylindrical fruit core. The remaining fruit pulp is bowl shaped and can be directly scooped up or refrigerated for storage. This method maximizes the retention of juice and is suitable for making beverages such as grapefruit tea.

Section peeling method

First, longitudinally peel off all the outer skin until the white film is exposed, and then split the single petal along the natural split of the grapefruit. Use your fingernail to open a small opening at the top of the valve and tear off the entire transparent membrane. The processed fruit pulp particles are clearly free of impurities, making it particularly suitable for children or the elderly to consume.

Five, Half Digging Method

Cut the grapefruit in half vertically and invert it onto a bowl. Use your palm to tap the bottom to make the flesh fall off. The residual fascia can be separated by gently scraping with a fork, which has a higher meat yield. The separated fruit pulp can be mixed with honey for consumption, and the remaining grapefruit peel can be used to make candied fruits or remove refrigerator odors.

When selecting a method, it is necessary to consider the variety and purpose of grapefruit. Thick skinned varieties such as Shatian grapefruit are suitable for top ring cutting method, while thin skinned varieties such as grapefruit are suitable for cross petal method. Soak grapefruit in warm water for 5 minutes before processing to soften the outer skin, and use a serrated knife to better control the cutting depth. It is recommended to seal and refrigerate the peeled fruit pulp in a glass container to avoid contact with metal containers that may cause oxidation and discoloration. Grapefruit peel is rich in active ingredients such as naringin. After drying, it can be boiled as a tea drink, but people with gastrointestinal sensitivity should control their consumption.
