Methods for identifying the authenticity of sesame oil

Distinguishing the authenticity of sesame oil can be comprehensively judged by observing color, smelling odor, testing solubility, checking sediment, comparing prices, and other methods. Common means of adulterating sesame oil include adding essence, pigment, low price vegetable oil, etc., and formal channels should be selected when purchasing.

1. Observe the color.

Pure sesame oil is reddish brown or dark brown, with good transparency and uniform color. The adulterated sesame oil may have a lighter or yellowish color, possibly due to the addition of pigments or low-priced vegetable oils. Drop sesame oil onto white paper. Pure sesame oil spreads slowly and has clear edges, while adulterated oil spreads quickly and has blurred edges.

2. Smell

Pure sesame oil has a rich and unique sesame tar aroma, with a long-lasting and non pungent scent. The adulterated sesame oil has a light fragrance or a pungent smell of chemical essence, and some of the adulterated sesame oil even has a flavor of harrah. You can rub a small amount of sesame oil hot and smell it. Pure sesame oil has a richer aroma when heated.

3. Test solubility

Take a drop of sesame oil and add it to clean water. Pure sesame oil will float on the water surface and form oil droplets that are not easily dispersed. Adulterated sesame oil may contain emulsifiers, which can quickly disperse or become cloudy when dropped into water. Under low temperature conditions, pure sesame oil may slightly solidify, while adulterated oil may completely solidify or stratify.

4. Check for sediment

After settling, there is no sediment at the bottom of the pure sesame oil, and the texture is clear and transparent. Adulteration of fragrant oil may result in flocculent, granular or layered phenomena, and some adulteration methods may add starch substances to increase viscosity. Shaking the bottle behind, the pure sesame oil bubbles are delicate and dissipate quickly.

5. Comparison Price

Pure sesame oil has a higher cost due to its low oil yield, and its market price is usually several times higher than that of ordinary vegetable oil. Products with prices significantly lower than the market average should be cautious, as some adulterated oils may be labeled as "blended sesame oil" to avoid regulation. It is recommended to choose legitimate brand products with SC certification.

Fragrance oil should be stored in a cool and dark place for daily use, and it is recommended to use it within three months after opening. Avoid high temperature stir frying during cooking to preserve nutrients, and adding it to cold dishes can enhance flavor. If any odor, discoloration, or abnormal taste is found in the sesame oil, it should be immediately stopped from consumption. Regularly changing purchasing channels can reduce the probability of long-term purchase of adulterated products, and if necessary, suspicious products can be reported to market regulatory authorities.
