Is weight loss beneficial for hypertension

Losing weight is usually beneficial for patients with hypertension, as it helps to lower blood pressure levels. After weight loss in hypertensive patients, the burden on the heart decreases, vascular pressure decreases, and blood pressure may decrease accordingly. Being overweight or obese is one of the important risk factors for hypertension. Excessive body fat can increase the pumping burden on the heart, while inflammatory factors secreted by adipose tissue may impair vascular function. After weight loss, the systemic blood circulation resistance decreases, the endothelial function of blood vessels improves, and the blood pressure regulation mechanism becomes more sensitive. Research shows that for every kilogram of weight loss, systolic blood pressure may decrease by about 1 millimeter of mercury. For some patients with secondary hypertension, the weight loss effect may not be as significant as that of primary hypertension. Hypertension caused by certain endocrine disorders, such as Cushing's syndrome or primary aldosteronism, requires targeted treatment for the underlying cause. In addition, excessive weight loss in elderly people with extremely low body weight may affect their nutritional status, and weight loss plans need to be adjusted under the guidance of a doctor. Patients with hypertension should adopt scientific methods for weight loss, including controlling daily calorie intake, increasing the proportion of vegetables, fruits, and whole grains, and reducing high salt and high-fat foods. Engage in 150 minutes of moderate intensity aerobic exercise per week, such as brisk walking, swimming, or cycling. To avoid rapid weight loss, it is advisable to lose 2-4 kilograms per month. Regularly monitor blood pressure changes and adjust the dosage of antihypertensive drugs according to medical advice. Maintaining a regular schedule, controlling emotional stress, quitting smoking and limiting alcohol consumption can also help with blood pressure management.
