Is taking a hot shower good for the skin

The impact of hot water bathing on the skin depends on whether the water temperature control is reasonable. Moderate warm water cleaning is helpful for skin health, but long-term use of excessively high water temperature may damage the skin barrier. When the water temperature approaches body temperature, it helps promote blood circulation, soften the stratum corneum, and does not excessively peel off sebum. Warm water can effectively clean the dirt and excess oil on the surface of the skin, especially for oily skin, it has a certain oil control effect. People with sensitive skin can choose a water temperature slightly below body temperature, combined with mild and weakly acidic bath products, to reduce damage to ceramides and maintain the integrity of the stratum corneum. Water temperature exceeding 40 degrees Celsius will accelerate the breakdown of sebum membrane, leading to the loss of natural moisturizing factors. High temperature stimulation may cause dry and itchy skin, exacerbating symptoms of atopic dermatitis or rosacea. Hot water can cause capillary dilation, and individuals with facial flushing may experience persistent erythema. Patients with diabetes and the elderly are more likely to be scalded due to high water temperature because of their dull skin.

It is recommended to control the bath water temperature at 37-39 degrees Celsius for no more than 15 minutes. Apply moisturizing products containing ceramide or shea butter within 3 minutes after bathing to repair the skin barrier. Reduce the frequency of bathing in winter and avoid using alkaline cleaners. If the skin becomes dry, flaky, or red with pain, you can switch to a soothing shower gel made from oat ingredients and consult a dermatologist if necessary.
