How to use a manual grapefruit juicer

The usage method of a manual grapefruit juicer mainly includes five steps: cleaning the fruit, cutting and processing, aligning the juicer, collecting the juice, and cleaning the utensils.

1. Cleaning Fruits

Before use, grapefruit should be thoroughly cleaned to remove any pesticides or dirt that may remain on the surface. It is recommended to rinse the surface with flowing water and gently brush the uneven areas with a soft bristled brush. If you pursue higher clarity, you can soak a small amount of baking soda water for a few minutes and then rinse to avoid damaging the fruit peel, so as not to affect the purity of the juice.

2. Cutting Processing

Cut the washed grapefruit horizontally in half to expose the cross-section of the flesh. For varieties with thicker fruit peels, you can first use a knife to cut a circle along the edge of the flesh to facilitate the separation of the flesh during subsequent juicing. When cutting, keep the cut surface flat to ensure that the juicer cone can fully contact the flesh tissue.

3. Align juicing.

Cut the half grapefruit face down and align it with the conical protrusion at the top of the juicer. Press the outer side of the fruit peel steadily with your palm, while rotating the fruit body clockwise 3-5 times. The pressure should be applied evenly and moderately, which can squeeze out the pulp juice without breaking the white sponge layer and causing bitterness to seep out.

4. Collecting Juice

The groove at the bottom of the juicer will collect the flowing juice and inject it into the container through the diversion port. It is recommended to use a graduated glass cup to receive it, which facilitates the control of the extraction amount. If kernels or debris are found mixed in, a fine mesh sieve can be used for secondary filtration to retain pure juice.

5. Cleaning utensils

Immediately rinse all parts of the juicer with warm water after use, focusing on cleaning the residual pulp fibers in the conical squeezing head. Stubborn stains can be cleaned with neutral detergent and sponge to avoid scratching the surface with steel wire balls. Wash and invert to dry, keeping the utensils dry to prevent bacteria.

When operating a manual juicer, it is recommended to choose grapefruit with moderate maturity. Over ripe fruit has a high juice yield but is prone to turbidity, while immature fruit has difficulty juicing. Before juicing, the fruit can be left at room temperature or gently rubbed to soften the cellular tissue. Timely cleaning after each use can extend the lifespan of the appliance, and regular inspection of the silicone sealing ring for aging. When pairing different citrus fruits, it is necessary to adjust the pressing force according to the hardness of the flesh. Varieties such as blood oranges can increase the number of rotations appropriately to improve juice extraction efficiency. Pay attention to drinking juice as soon as possible after extraction to avoid oxidation and loss of vitamin C.
