How to store strawberries until the next day

Strawberries should be stored for the next day to avoid squeezing and moisture. Methods such as refrigeration, ventilated containers, preservation of fruit stems, avoidance of washing, and separate storage can be used to extend the shelf life.

1. Refrigeration

Placing strawberries in the refrigerator compartment is the most common way of storage. Controlling the temperature between 0-4 degrees Celsius can effectively delay decay. When storing, it should be spread flat in an open container lined with kitchen paper to avoid the accumulation of condensed water. Refrigeration can maintain the appearance and taste of strawberries for about 24-48 hours, but the sweetness will decrease over time.

2. Ventilation Container

Using plastic boxes or bamboo baskets with breathable holes to hold strawberries can reduce water vapor retention. Prohibit the use of completely sealed freshness boxes, as the ethylene gas produced by strawberry respiration can accelerate its own maturation and decay. Placing absorbent paper inside the container can absorb excess moisture, and it is better to separate each layer of strawberries with oil paper.

3. Keep the fruit stem

When picking or purchasing, keeping the green strawberry stem can reduce the exposed area of the fruit flesh and juice loss. Pinch the fruit stem and handle it gently to avoid damaging the skin. The fruit stem can be removed before consumption, which can extend the shelf life of strawberries by about 30%.

Fourth, avoid washing with water

Do not clean strawberries before storage, as moisture on the skin can promote mold growth. If cleaning is required, gently wipe the surface with a slightly damp cotton cloth and store it after it is completely dried. If it has been washed with water, it must be dried with kitchen paper and consumed within 6 hours as a priority.

Fifth, Separate Storage

Strawberries should not be mixed with other fruits, especially away from fruits such as apples and bananas that release large amounts of ethylene. Storing separately can reduce the probability of mutual ripening. Strawberries found to be partially rotten should be picked out immediately to prevent mold from spreading and contaminating the entire batch of fruits. Strawberries belong to the berry fruit category, with fragile skin and high sugar content, and are highly susceptible to spoilage due to mechanical damage or microbial growth. In addition to the above methods, it is recommended to purchase in batches according to actual consumption and store at room temperature for no more than 6 hours. If longer storage is required, strawberry jam can be made or frozen, but freezing can cause cell rupture and affect taste. Before consumption, check for mold spots or fermented flavors. Strawberries that have slightly softened can be processed into smoothies or baked ingredients and heated thoroughly before consumption.
