How to store strawberries after buying them

After purchasing strawberries, it is recommended to refrigerate them and avoid squeezing them while keeping them dry. Strawberries are prone to decay and deterioration, mainly influenced by factors such as temperature, humidity, ventilation, cleanliness of contact surfaces, and storage containers.

1. Refrigerate storage

Place unwashed strawberries in a fresh-keeping box, cover with a layer of kitchen paper to absorb moisture, and leave a gap in the box cover for ventilation. The temperature in the refrigerator compartment should be controlled between 0-4 degrees Celsius to slow down the growth of mold. The water droplets on the surface of strawberries will accelerate decay, so they must be thoroughly dried before refrigeration after cleaning.

2. Avoid light and moisture

Strawberries should be kept away from direct sunlight and high temperature environments, as light exposure can accelerate the loss of vitamin C. A humid environment can easily lead to mold growth. When storing, breathable paper bags can be used instead of plastic bags to avoid the accumulation of condensation water. If individual rotten fruits are found, they should be picked out immediately to prevent the spread of mold.

3. Packaging Processing

Large quantities of strawberries should be stored in small portions to reduce temperature fluctuations caused by opening and closing times. The contact surface should be clean and dry, and stacked in no more than two layers. Short term storage can preserve the fruit stem and extend its freshness. Long term freezing requires removing the stem and spreading it flat for quick freezing, making strawberry ice cubes to preserve the flavor.

4. Container selection

Ceramic or glass containers are superior to plastic products, with better breathability and temperature stability. The depth of the container should not exceed 15 centimeters, as excessive depth can cause the bottom fruit to be compressed. The perforated fruit and vegetable fresh-keeping box can balance humidity. If using a regular container, it is necessary to check the condensation water condition daily.

5. Eating Plan

Mature strawberries are best consumed within 3 days, and the sweetness gradually decreases from the second day of refrigeration. Slightly damaged fruits are prioritized for processing into sauces or desserts, while intact fruits are kept for fresh consumption. Frozen strawberries are suitable for juicing or baking, and their texture will soften after thawing. Strawberries are high moisture berries and should be regularly checked for condition during storage. If there is white frost or alcohol smell on the surface, it should be discarded immediately, as moldy toxins may have penetrated the entire fruit. When purchasing, choose strawberries that are firm, plump, and have fresh green fruit stems, and avoid severe bumps during transportation. For short-term storage, try lightly wiping the surface with white vinegar water to kill bacteria. For long-term storage, it is recommended to make dried strawberries or jam. Gently rinse with running water before consumption, soaking can actually accelerate nutrient loss.
