How to store blueberries for a long time

The main methods for storing blueberries for a long time include refrigeration, freezing, vacuum preservation, drying preservation, and processing preservation.

1. Refrigerate storage

Place fresh blueberries in a breathable fresh-keeping box, cover the bottom with kitchen paper to absorb moisture, seal and place in the refrigerator compartment. Temperature control at 0-4 degrees Celsius can store for 5-7 days. Be careful not to refrigerate after cleaning, as natural fruit powder on the surface can protect the fruit. If moldy fruits are found, they should be picked out immediately to avoid contaminating other blueberries.

2. Frozen storage

Blueberries that have been cleaned should be thoroughly dried, spread flat on a baking tray, and frozen for 2 hours to shape. Then, they should be placed in a sealed bag and purged of air for freezing. It can be stored for 10-12 months in an environment of minus 18 degrees Celsius. It is recommended to use it directly for making milkshakes or baking during thawing to avoid repeated thawing affecting the taste. Freezing will soften the flesh and is not suitable for fresh consumption.

3. Vacuum preservation

Use a food vacuum machine to remove air from the packaging, isolate oxygen, and delay oxidation. Unclean blueberries can be vacuum refrigerated for up to 2 weeks and vacuum frozen for up to 18 months. Pay attention to choosing food grade vacuum bags and avoid squeezing fruits when vacuuming. This method can maximize the retention of anthocyanin content.

4. Dry and store

Bake at 60 degrees Celsius for 8-10 hours to make dried blueberries, or use a food dryer for processing. Dried blueberries that have been completely dehydrated should be sealed and stored away from light. They can be stored at room temperature for up to 6 months. The drying process may result in the loss of some vitamin C, but dietary fiber and minerals remain intact. Soak in warm water before consumption to restore some taste.

5. Processing and Preservation

Processing and preservation

involves using sugar or alcohol for preservation through methods such as making jam, candied fruits, or brewing. Homemade blueberry sauce can be stored for 3 months after boiling and bottling, and adding lemon juice can enhance the preservation effect. Processing can alter the proportion of nutrients, but antioxidants such as anthocyanins are still retained in large quantities and are suitable as dietary supplements.
