How to remove the moldy smell from Xiaomi

Xiaomi has a moldy smell that can be removed through methods such as air drying and ventilation, washing and filtering, and high-temperature steaming. The moldy smell is usually caused by improper storage leading to the growth of mold. Mild mold growth can still be consumed after treatment, but it is recommended to discard it if the mold growth is severe.

Lay the millet flat in a dry and ventilated place to air dry for several hours. The ultraviolet rays in the sunlight help to decompose the metabolic products of the mold. When the moldy smell is mild, it can be washed repeatedly with water 3-4 times, and the floating moldy particles can be filtered with a sieve. Steam for 15 minutes in a steamer or use an electric rice cooker to cook at high temperatures, as high temperatures can effectively destroy fungal active substances. If Xiaomi has clumped, discolored, or has a strong odor, it indicates that harmful substances such as aflatoxins may have been generated in large quantities. This type of deeply moldy millet cannot completely remove toxins even with high temperature treatment at 100 ℃, and continued consumption may cause gastrointestinal discomfort and even liver damage. Some people mistakenly believe that the moldy area is limited to the surface, and still consume internal millet after removal, which poses health risks.

To prevent mold growth in millet, attention should be paid to sealing and moisture prevention. It is recommended to store it in a cool and dry place in a glass container, and natural insect proof materials such as food desiccants or Sichuan peppercorns can be added. When purchasing, choose new rice with intact particles and a golden color. Purchase in small quantities multiple times to avoid long-term storage. Moldy food may contain fungal toxins that are not visible to the naked eye. If the processed food still has an odor, it should be stopped immediately. Special populations such as pregnant women, children, or those with low immunity should be cautious.
