How to remedy walnut leakage

Walnut leakage can be remedied by refrigeration, drying, consuming as soon as possible, making walnut products, and checking for mold. Walnuts that leak are prone to moisture and spoilage, and corresponding measures should be taken according to the specific situation.

1. Refrigerate storage

Put the leaked walnuts into a sealed bag or fresh-keeping box and store them in the refrigerator compartment. Low temperature environment can slow down the oxidation rate of walnuts and prevent oil spoilage. It is recommended to consume refrigerated walnuts within two weeks to avoid affecting their taste due to prolonged storage. If walnuts are found to have a rancid taste or darken in color, they should be discarded immediately.

2. Drying treatment

Use an oven or microwave to bake the leaked walnuts at a low temperature of around 60 degrees Celsius for no more than 10 minutes. Drying treatment can effectively remove surface moisture from walnuts and prevent mold growth. The processed walnuts should be cooled before being sealed and stored to avoid condensation inside the packaging due to heat. Be careful to avoid nutrient loss caused by high temperature baking.

3. Eat as soon as possible

Leaked walnuts should be prioritized for cooking or consumed directly, and can be added to salads, baked goods, or beaten into walnut sauce. Broken walnut kernels are more prone to oxidation and spoilage, and it is recommended to consume them within 3 days. Before consumption, it is necessary to carefully check for mold or odor to ensure food safety. Walnuts are rich in unsaturated fatty acids, and timely consumption can maximize their nutritional value.

4. Making walnut products

Processing leaked walnuts into products such as walnut oil, walnut powder, or walnut sauce. Physical pressing or grinding can extend the shelf life and facilitate daily consumption. Homemade walnut products should be disinfected and sealed for storage. It is recommended to refrigerate and use within one month. During the processing, avoid high temperatures that can damage the nutrients such as vitamin E in walnuts.

5. Check for mold

Carefully inspect the leaked walnuts for mold spots, discoloration, or odor. Moldy walnuts can produce harmful substances such as aflatoxins. Walnuts with slight mold should be discarded in batches, and only the moldy parts should be removed before continuing to be consumed. The environment for storing walnuts should be kept dry and ventilated, and the relative humidity should be controlled below 60% to effectively prevent mold growth.

For daily storage of walnuts, it is recommended to choose a cool and dry place, and use a sealed container to isolate air and moisture. Whole shelled walnuts can be stored at room temperature for several months, while shelled walnut kernels are best consumed within one month. Walnuts are rich in protein, unsaturated fatty acids, and various minerals, but their high oil content makes them prone to oxidation. Therefore, they should be sealed and stored as soon as possible after opening. If obvious signs of spoilage are found in walnuts, they should not be continued to be consumed for health reasons. Regularly check the storage situation to avoid excessive waste caused by one-time purchases.
