How to prevent potatoes from sprouting

Preventing potato germination can be achieved through methods such as storing in the dark, storing at low temperatures, isolating from air, avoiding mixing, and conducting regular inspections.

1. Avoid light storage

Direct sunlight can accelerate the sprouting process of potatoes. It is recommended to store potatoes in a cool and ventilated cabinet or cardboard box, and wrap them in dark plastic bags to block out light. Underground or storage rooms without direct sunlight are more suitable for long-term storage, as ultraviolet light in the light can activate solanine synthase in the potato skin.

2. Low temperature storage

Controlling the ambient temperature at 4-8 degrees Celsius can effectively inhibit germination. Can be placed in the vegetable and fruit preservation area of the refrigerator, but care should be taken to prevent condensation from causing mold. In winter, it can be stored on unheated balconies. High temperatures can promote bud and eye cell division, while temperatures below zero may cause frostbite.

3. Isolate from air

Wrapping with plastic wrap or vacuum sealing can delay germination. Putting food desiccants in storage containers to absorb moisture and reduce oxygen exposure can lower respiration. When stored in a cellar, it can be covered with dry sand to form a physical barrier that blocks the exchange of substances between potatoes and the air.

4. Avoid mixing

It is prohibited to store fruits that release ethylene, such as apples and bananas, together. Ethylene, as a plant ripening hormone, stimulates bud germination, and the sulfides released by onions have a synergistic effect. Suggest storing separately or pairing with anti sprouting ingredients such as thin lotus leaves.

Fifth, Regular Inspection

Flip and check once a week to promptly remove individuals that have sprouted or have green skin. In the early stage of germination, the bud eyes and surrounding tissues can be removed before consumption, but if there is a large area of green allergy, it should be discarded. Storage containers should be kept clean and dry, and moldy individuals should be immediately isolated and treated.

In addition to the above methods, choose fresh potatoes with intact skin and sunken bud holes when purchasing, and prioritize consuming smaller potatoes. Short term storage can be cooked and frozen, while long-term storage is recommended to make dried potatoes. If slight sprouting is found, soaking in vinegar water can reduce the content of solanine, but pregnant women and children should avoid consuming sprouted potatoes. Keep the storage environment humidity at around 85%. Excessive drying can cause wrinkling, and high humidity can easily lead to decay. Combining multiple anti sprouting measures can extend the shelf life to more than three months.
