How to prevent potato sprouting

The main methods to prevent potato germination include low-temperature storage, dark storage, air isolation, avoiding damage, and using natural inhibitors.

1. Low temperature storage

Placing potatoes in a cool environment at 4-6 degrees Celsius can effectively delay germination. Low temperature can inhibit potato respiration and reduce enzyme activity, but attention should be paid to avoiding starch conversion caused by freezing. The lower level of cellars, basements, or refrigerators is an ideal choice, and it is necessary to maintain a dry environment to prevent mold growth.

2. Avoid light storage

Direct sunlight can accelerate the production of solanine in potatoes and stimulate bud germination. It is recommended to wrap it in an opaque container or brown paper bag and store it in a dark place such as a cabinet. Purple skinned potatoes are preferred because they contain anthocyanins and have stronger anti germination properties.

3. Air isolation

can block oxygen contact by using vacuum sealed bags or nitrogen filled packaging. The commonly used method in folk culture is to store potatoes in layers with dry sand. The sand can absorb excess moisture and form a physical isolation layer, and the moisture content of the sand needs to be checked regularly.

4. Avoid damaging

Potatoes with intact skin are not easy to germinate, and should be handled gently during harvesting and transportation. Remove mechanical damage or diseased tubers before storage, as the wound will release ethylene to promote germination. Different batches of potatoes should be stored separately, as mixing old and new potatoes can accelerate metabolism.

5. Natural inhibitor

The ethylene gas released by apples can inhibit potato germination. Place 1-2 apples per 5 kilograms of potatoes. Aromatic plants such as mint leaves and rosemary contain volatile anti sprouting components, which can be stored in layers with potatoes. Fumigation with edible plant essential oils also has a similar effect.

In addition to the above methods, it is recommended to regularly check the status of stored potatoes and promptly remove spoiled individuals. A large amount of solanine will accumulate around the sprout eyes of sprouted potatoes, and even if the sprout eyes are removed, there may still be residues. Pregnant women and children should avoid consuming it. Short term storage can use small potatoes, which have a longer dormancy period. Commercial storage often uses irradiation treatment, and potatoes can be stored together with garlic at home. Allicin can inhibit bud cell division. Keep the storage environment ventilated and dry, with a relative humidity controlled at around 85%, and can be used in conjunction with bamboo charcoal bags to absorb excess moisture.
