Coconut water can be extracted through two methods: pouring out through holes or separating by breaking the shell. The specific methods mainly include top drilling method, bottom drilling method, knife back tapping method, tool breaking method, and refrigeration assisted method.
1. Top Drilling Method
Use a screwdriver or specialized coconut cutter to drill holes in the three depressions on the top of the coconut, with the softer embryo hole directly penetrable. After inserting the straw, tilt the coconut to pour out the juice, suitable for direct consumption. Pay attention to cleaning the surface of the tool before drilling to avoid impurities contaminating the juice.
2. Bottom Hole Method
Invert the coconut and make small holes in the thinner part of the bottom. The juice will naturally flow out due to gravity. This method can fully preserve the top hard shell as a container, and the poured coconut water can be used for cooking or mixing drinks. It is recommended to wrap the coconut with a towel to prevent slipping during operation.
3. Knife back tapping method
Use a kitchen knife to strike the back of the knife evenly along the equator of the coconut. After a crack appears, break it in half and filter the coconut meat debris with a filter. This method is suitable for scenarios where coconut meat needs to be obtained simultaneously, but the force needs to be controlled to avoid splashing of the juice. Fresh green coconut is easier to handle using this method.
4. Tool Shell Breaking Method
Use coconut specific shell breaking pliers to fix the coconut and pry open the shell through the lever principle. Professional tools can accurately control the location of cracking and avoid wasting juice. When dealing with old coconut, it is recommended to first bake it in an oven at 150 degrees Celsius for 10 minutes to make it easier to separate the shell and meat.
5. Refrigeration Assistance Method
After refrigerating the coconut for 2 hours, remove it. Low temperature will cause gaps between the coconut water and the inner wall. At this point, shaking the coconut upside down makes it easier for the juice to concentrate and flow out. This method is particularly suitable for handling coconut that has undergone slight fermentation after transportation, as low temperatures can improve its taste.
When obtaining coconut water, it is recommended to choose fresh coconuts that are heavy in weight, have a shaking sound, and drink them as soon as possible after opening the holes to ensure flavor. Unconsumed coconut water can be sealed and refrigerated for 24 hours, and its natural electrolytes are suitable for replenishment after exercise. If long-term storage is required, coconut water can be boiled and sterilized before freezing, but some active nutrients may be lost. The coconut meat extracted from the shell can be used to make coconut milk or dried at low temperatures to produce coconut paste, achieving full utilization of coconut.
