Coconut water can be directly consumed from fresh coconut juice. There are mainly methods to open the coconut, such as knife tapping, drilling, high-temperature cracking, professional tool method, and freeze separation method.
1. Knife back tapping method
Use the knife back to strike horizontally along the middle of the coconut, rotate the coconut and repeat tapping until cracks appear. This method is suitable for green coconut, and attention should be paid to the tapping force to avoid splashing of juice. After knocking it open, you can drink it directly with a straw or pour it into a cup. Coconut meat can be scooped up with a spoon. It is recommended to use a towel to prevent slipping during operation, in order to avoid hand injuries from cutting tools.
2. Drilling and Water Extraction Method
Use a screwdriver or specialized coconut opener to drill holes at the three soft holes on the top of the coconut, insert a straw, and drink. This method is suitable for Thai perfume coconut and other varieties, and can completely preserve the coconut shell. Before drilling, it is necessary to confirm the position of the soft eye to avoid selecting the wrong location, which may result in poor juice flow. Coconuts can be refrigerated and stored after consumption.
3. High temperature cracking method
Place the coconut in an oven at 200 degrees Celsius and heat for 15 minutes. After cooling, the shell will naturally crack. High temperatures can cause the coconut meat to separate from the outer shell, making it easier to remove the coconut meat completely. This method is suitable for old coconuts, as the temperature of coconut water increases after heating without affecting its nutritional value. Wear insulated gloves during operation to avoid burns.
4. Professional Tool Method
Using a coconut specific opener or electric coconut opener, you can quickly and safely open the coconut. Professional tools can accurately control the opening size to avoid wasting juice. Some tools come with collection slots, suitable for batch processing of coconuts. When choosing tools, pay attention to the blade material, stainless steel material is more durable and hygienic.
5. Freeze separation method
After freezing the coconut for 2 hours, the temperature difference will cause the coconut shell and flesh to shrink differently, resulting in cracks. This method is suitable for making coconut paste from coconut meat. After freezing, the coconut water will freeze and expand, and it needs to be thawed before drinking. The freezing process can prolong the storage time of coconuts, but they should be consumed as soon as possible after thawing to avoid spoilage. Coconut water is rich in electrolytes and minerals. Drinking it after exercise can replenish water, but daily intake should not exceed 500 milliliters. When opening coconuts, it is recommended to choose green coconuts with moderate maturity. The outer shell is greenish green and there is a noticeable sound of water when shaken. Before drinking, observe whether the coconut water is clear. If there is turbidity or odor, it should be discarded. Coconut water should be refrigerated and consumed within 24 hours after opening to prevent bacterial growth. Coconut meat can be used to make desserts or paired with seafood for cooking, but it has a high calorie content and needs to be consumed in moderation.
