How long should strawberries be soaked in salt water for washing

It is generally recommended to soak strawberries in salt water for 10-15 minutes, which can effectively clean the surface residue and avoid nutrient loss. The specific time can be adjusted based on factors such as strawberry skin integrity and seasonal temperature differences. When the fresh strawberry skin is intact, soaking for 10 minutes is enough to remove most of the dust and pesticide residues. The appropriate concentration of salt water is 3% -5%, which means adding 15-25 grams of salt to 500 milliliters of water and keeping the water temperature at 20-30 degrees Celsius for the best effect. During the soaking process, gently stir to help dissolve attachments, but avoid rubbing and damaging the fruit flesh with force. Strawberries grown in greenhouses in spring can be appropriately extended to 15 minutes due to the use of pesticides, while strawberries grown outdoors in summer can be soaked for 8-10 minutes. Strawberries with damaged or visibly rotten skin should not be soaked for a long time. After a quick 5-minute cleaning, they should be consumed immediately. When the winter water temperature is low, it can be extended to 20 minutes, but exceeding 30 minutes can lead to a significant loss of vitamin C. If there are many insect eggs on the surface of organically grown strawberries, they can be washed with running water to extend soaking for 15 minutes. People who are allergic to salt water can use baking soda solution as a substitute, with a concentration controlled below 1%.

After cleaning strawberries, rinse them twice with cold water to remove salt, and gently brush the concave part of the stem with a soft bristled brush. Keep the fruit stems intact during storage and refrigerate in a ventilated container for no more than 2 days. For those with spleen and stomach deficiency and cold, it is recommended to wash with warm water before consumption. Children and the elderly can peel their skin before consumption to reduce irritation. If obvious discoloration or flocculent substances are found in the salt water after soaking, it indicates that there are more pesticide residues and should be avoided from consumption.
