How long does it take to cook rice porridge in a rice cooker

Cooking porridge in an electric rice cooker usually takes 30-40 minutes, and the specific time is affected by various factors such as the rice water ratio, the functional mode of the electric rice cooker, the type of rice, soaking time, and insulation time.

1. Rice water ratio

The ratio of rice to water directly affects the thickness and cooking time of porridge. It is usually recommended to have a rice water ratio of 1:5 to 1:8, with the more water, the thinner the porridge and the shorter the required time. If the amount of water is too low, it may cause the bottom to stick, and the heating time needs to be extended.

2. Function mode

The gruel mode or Congee cooking mode of the electric rice cooker will intelligently adjust the power and time, which is generally automatically set to about 35 minutes. When using the regular cooking mode, it is necessary to manually extend the heating time to more than 40 minutes and be careful to stir halfway to prevent overflow.

3. Type of Rice

Japonica rice is easier to cook than indica rice and usually takes 30 minutes to complete. If adding coarse grains such as brown rice and black rice, soak them for 1 hour in advance and extend the cooking time to 50 minutes. Glutinous rice ingredients have high stickiness, it is recommended to reduce the amount of water and shorten it to 25 minutes.

4. Soaking time

Soaking raw rice 20-30 minutes in advance can shorten the formal cooking time by about 10 minutes, especially suitable for the soft and tender taste needed by the elderly and children. However, soaking in a high temperature environment for more than 1 hour in summer may cause deterioration, and it is recommended to refrigerate and soak.

5. Insulation time

After the rice cooker trips, using the remaining temperature to stew for 10-15 minutes can fully absorb water from the rice grains and improve the texture of the porridge. If using the insulation function for continuous heating, it should be consumed within 2 hours to avoid excessive evaporation of water or bacterial growth. When cooking porridge, ingredients such as yam and pumpkin can be used to increase nutrition, but the amount of water needs to be adjusted accordingly. When using aged rice, the cooking time should be extended and more water should be added. The thermal conductivity efficiency of rice cookers varies depending on the material of the inner pot, and ceramic inner pots require slightly longer time than aluminum alloy inner pots. Suggest trying multiple times based on personal taste preferences to find the most suitable rice water ratio and time combination. After cooking, consume immediately or seal and refrigerate. When reheating, add a small amount of boiling water and stir to restore the original taste.
