Do tea leaves need to be stored away from light

Tea needs to be stored away from light, as light exposure can accelerate the oxidation of tea and lead to a decrease in quality. The key factors for storing tea include avoiding light, sealing, moisture, odor, and low temperature.

1. Avoid Light

Ultraviolet rays in light can decompose chlorophyll and tea polyphenols in tea leaves, leading to darkening of color and loss of aroma. Especially unfermented teas such as green tea are more sensitive to light, it is recommended to store them in tin foil bags or opaque ceramic jars.

2. Sealing

Tea leaves will absorb moisture and oxidize when exposed to air, while sealing can isolate oxygen and moisture. Food grade aluminum foil bags can be used for vacuum storage, or tea cans with silicone sealing rings can be selected. After opening, drink as soon as possible.

3. Moisture proof

Tea leaves with a moisture content exceeding 6% are prone to mold growth and should be kept away from damp environments. Food desiccants can be placed in storage containers, but avoid direct contact with tea leaves. It is recommended to pack small portions and refrigerate them in humid southern regions.

4. Odor prevention

The porous structure of tea leaves is prone to absorbing surrounding odors and should be kept away from spices, cosmetics, and other items. Processed teas such as jasmine tea should be stored separately to avoid cross flavors that affect the original flavor.

5. Low temperature

The rate of tea deterioration doubles for every 10 ℃ increase in temperature, and unopened tea can be frozen for storage. It is recommended to refrigerate tea for daily consumption. After removing it, wait for it to return to room temperature before opening to prevent condensation from entering. The storage period of different types of tea varies greatly, with green tea having a shelf life of about 12 months and black tea up to 36 months. Black tea and white tea are suitable for long-term aging. Regardless of the type of tea, it should be placed in a cool and dry place, away from direct sunlight. When brewing, pay attention to whether there are mold spots or odors on the tea leaves. If the tea leaves spoil, stop drinking immediately. It is recommended to use a dry tea spoon for daily tea picking to avoid hand moisture contamination of the tea leaves.
