Shoulder and neck massage can relieve muscle tension through techniques such as kneading, tapping, massage, tapping, and stretching. Shoulder and neck massage can improve local blood circulation, relieve soreness and stiffness caused by prolonged sitting, fatigue, or exposure to cold. The intensity should be adjusted according to individual tolerance during the operation.
1. Kneading
The kneading technique involves using the thumb and the other four fingers to knead and hold the trapezius and levator scapula muscles in a circular motion around the shoulder and neck. This technique can release surface muscle adhesions, promote the elimination of metabolic waste, and is suitable for muscle fatigue soreness. During operation, it is advisable to avoid the cervical spine spinous process and apply enough force to create a feeling of soreness and swelling. This should last for 3-5 minutes on one side.
2. Click
Use the thumb or elbow tip to vertically press against acupoints such as Fengchi and Jianjing. By stimulating the meridians and acupoints, the circulation of qi and blood can be regulated, which has a relieving effect on occiput and headache. Follow the principle of pressing from light to heavy, press each acupoint for 10-15 seconds and then slowly release, repeating 3-5 times.
3. Tuina
Tuina techniques involve pushing in a straight or curved line along the direction of the muscles, often using the palm root to push and caress from the neck root towards the shoulder peak. This technique can dilate capillaries, accelerate local blood circulation, and is suitable for situations where the shoulders and neck become tight after being exposed to cold. Before operation, it can be combined with essential oils to reduce friction, and pushed in one direction 10-15 times.
4. Tapping
Tapping technique involves rhythmically tapping the shoulder and neck area with a hollow palm or fingertip. Vibration stimulation can enhance muscle elasticity and improve muscle fiber shortening caused by long-term sitting. Be careful to avoid protruding areas of the bones, and apply pressure based on the patient's level of painlessness for 1-2 minutes.
V. Pulling and Stretching
The pulling and stretching technique requires fixing the patient's shoulder and slowly pulling the cervical spine while holding the lower jaw with the other hand. This technique can enlarge the intervertebral space, alleviate nerve root edema, and is suitable for early cervical disc herniation. During operation, the traction force should not exceed one tenth of the body weight, and it should be maintained for 15-20 seconds before relaxing.
It is recommended to drink warm ginger and red date tea behind the shoulders and neck to help drive away cold and promote blood circulation, and avoid immediate contact with cold water or cold wind. Perform daily neck exercises to move joints, and choose a pillow of moderate height to maintain the physiological curvature of the cervical spine during sleep. If dizziness or pain intensifies after massage, stop immediately and consult a professional physician. Long term shoulder and neck discomfort should be treated with a combination of moxibustion, acupuncture, and other comprehensive treatments, as well as correcting poor sitting habits.
