Can tea still be consumed after being exposed to sunlight

If tea leaves are not damp or spoiled after being exposed to sunlight, they can generally be consumed. If tea leaves become moldy or lose their flavor due to exposure to sunlight, it is not recommended to continue drinking. Short term sun drying of tea leaves in sunlight usually does not affect their quality, especially for some traditional tea leaves such as white tea and Pu erh tea that require moderate sun drying. The ultraviolet rays in sunlight have a certain bactericidal effect, but excessive exposure to sunlight may cause the oxidation of tea polyphenols in tea leaves, accelerate the volatilization of aroma, and make the taste of tea soup lighter or appear sun dried. When storing, ensure that the environment is dry and away from light to avoid secondary moisture.

Long term direct sunlight or high temperature exposure may damage the contents of tea leaves, leading to chlorophyll degradation, loss of aromatic substances, and even the production of aged or halal flavors. If the tea leaves show obvious discoloration, clumping, mold or odor, it indicates that there has been a qualitative change and may breed harmful microorganisms such as Aspergillus flavus, which may cause gastrointestinal discomfort after consumption. It is recommended to store tea leaves in a cool and ventilated place, and seal them in tin or purple clay jars for preservation.

For daily storage of tea, it is recommended to choose containers that are dark, moisture-proof, and sealed to avoid contact with odorous items. Green tea, fragrant oolong tea, and other types that are sensitive to light should be stored in shaded areas. If tea leaves are found to be damp, they can be temporarily dried in the shade, but moldy tea leaves must be discarded. Moderate tea consumption can help with antioxidant and refreshing effects, but spoiled tea may pose health risks and should be carefully identified.
