Scallions can generally continue to grow by leaving only the roots, but they need to meet the conditions of complete root system and preservation of part of the stem base. Scallion has strong regenerative ability, as long as the roots are not damaged and have a small amount of stem tissue, it can germinate again under suitable water, light, and temperature conditions. If the roots are dry and rotten or the stem base is completely removed, it is difficult to regenerate. After replanting scallions with healthy root systems, new shoots can usually be seen sprouting within 7-10 days. Choose loose and fertile soil, bury the roots about 3 centimeters deep in the soil, keep the soil moist but avoid water accumulation. When planting outdoors in spring and autumn, receiving 4-6 hours of scattered light per day is more conducive to growth. Diluted organic fertilizer can be applied every two weeks after the new leaves grow, and care should be taken to avoid direct contact between the fertilizer and the roots. If the roots of scallions turn black, soften, and have a distinct putrid odor, it indicates that they have lost their regenerative ability. During high temperatures in summer, hydroponic regeneration is also prone to failure. Water temperatures exceeding 30 degrees Celsius can lead to root system hypoxia and decay. Hydroponic cultivation requires daily water change and removal of sticky roots. A shallow container should be used to allow the stem base to slightly touch the water surface. Oversoaking can actually inhibit the development of new roots.
During the regeneration process of scallions, the condition of the leaves can be regularly observed. Yellowing of new leaves may indicate nitrogen deficiency, and burnt leaf tips may indicate excessive sunlight. When transitioning from hydroponics to soil cultivation, it is recommended to allow new roots to grow to at least 5 centimeters before transplanting. For daily cooking, priority can be given to picking the outer leaves and preserving the central growth point to extend the harvesting period. Pay attention to rotating with fragrant vegetables such as chives and garlic sprouts to avoid excessive consumption of soil nutrients.
