Scallions can be stored in the refrigerator, but they are more suitable for a cool and ventilated environment. Scallions are storage tolerant vegetables. Short term refrigeration can delay germination, while long-term refrigeration may cause the meat to become soft or moldy. When scallions are refrigerated in the refrigerator, a low temperature environment can slow down their respiration, delay germination and water loss, making them suitable for storing sliced scallions or whole scallions for short-term consumption. It is recommended to wrap it in a breathable fresh-keeping bag and place it in the vegetable and fruit compartment of the refrigerator to avoid direct contact with other ingredients. Traditional preservation methods can maintain the protective effect of the outer scales of scallions and prevent mold growth caused by moisture in the refrigerator. When the humidity of the storage environment exceeds 70%, scallions are prone to rooting or rotting, and can be soaked in newspaper to absorb moisture. If long-term storage is required, scallions can be stored together with baking soda bags to neutralize some ethylene gas.

Daily storage of scallions should be selected according to usage needs, and small quantities should be purchased in batches to ensure freshness. Avoid mixing with root vegetables such as potatoes and sweet potatoes that are prone to releasing ethylene. If sprouts are found but not moldy, they can still be consumed after removing the sprouts, but their nutritional value and flavor will decrease. Check for any odor or mucus before cooking to ensure food safety.
