Can mushrooms be refrigerated for storage

Mushrooms can be stored refrigerated, but attention should be paid to the storage method and time. Fresh mushrooms can delay decay in low temperature environments, but improper storage may result in water loss or spoilage. Fresh mushrooms do not need to be cleaned before being placed in the refrigerator, as humid environments can accelerate decay. Use paper bags or breathable containers to prevent the accumulation of moisture caused by sealing plastic bags. Temperature control at 2-4 degrees Celsius can store for 3-5 days, and some varieties with thicker meat such as shiitake mushrooms can be extended to 7 days. Mushrooms that have been refrigerated may exhibit slight surface browning, and the discolored parts can still be consumed after removal. Some cooked mushrooms that have been blanched or cooked are more suitable for cryopreservation. Freezing raw mushrooms directly can cause cell rupture, and the taste deteriorates after thawing. If long-term storage is required, mushrooms can be sliced and blanched for 1 minute, drained and packaged for freezing, with a shelf life of up to 1 month. Wild mushrooms are not recommended for home storage as they may contain toxins.

When storing mushrooms on a daily basis, it is necessary to regularly check for mold or odors, and avoid mixing them with strongly scented foods. Mushrooms that have been refrigerated may experience some loss of nutrients, so it is recommended to consume them as soon as possible. Clean the surface with a soft brush before cooking to reduce contact with moisture. For pre packaged mushrooms purchased from supermarkets, retaining the original packaging and placing them on the top of the refrigerator compartment is more conducive to preservation. If mushrooms become sticky or soft, they should be immediately discarded and not eaten.
