Metformin may indeed help some people lose weight, but it is not a medication specifically designed for weight loss. Metformin is the first choice for the treatment of type 2 diabetes. Its weight loss effect is mainly related to improving insulin resistance, inhibiting liver sugar output and reducing appetite. Weight change usually occurs as a side effect of the treatment of diabetes, rather than as a primary purpose.

For patients with type 2 diabetes, metformin indirectly affects weight by reducing blood sugar levels. This drug can reduce liver glucose production, improve muscle tissue's uptake efficiency of glucose, and delay intestinal absorption of glucose. Together, these mechanisms may lead to weight loss in some patients, especially in diabetes patients with obesity. Clinical observations have shown that patients using metformin may experience an average weight loss, but there are significant individual differences, and the extent of weight loss usually gradually becomes apparent within a few months.

The use of metformin for weight loss in non diabetes population is controversial and has limited effect. Although a few studies have shown that this drug may be helpful for weight management in patients with polycystic ovary syndrome, its use in healthy individuals may cause side effects such as gastrointestinal discomfort and vitamin B12 deficiency. There is currently insufficient evidence to support the use of metformin as a routine weight loss medication, and self medication without medical guidance may lead to risks such as hypoglycemia.

Maintaining regular exercise and engaging in aerobic activities such as brisk walking or swimming for at least 30 minutes daily can help maintain basal metabolic rate. In terms of diet, refined carbohydrate intake should be controlled, the proportion of whole grains and vegetables should be increased, and high-quality protein such as fish or soy products should be paired with each meal. For obese patients who do require medication intervention, it is recommended to choose nationally approved weight loss drugs under the guidance of a doctor and adjust their lifestyle to achieve healthy weight loss.
