Can fresh wet seaweed still be eaten after being frozen for a year

It is not recommended to consume fresh wet seaweed that has been frozen for one year. Freezing seaweed for too long may lead to nutrient loss, poor taste, and the risk of microbial contamination. Seaweed is a type of seaweed food that is rich in protein, vitamins, and minerals, but has a high water content. Although fresh wet seaweed can delay spoilage in a frozen state, long-term freezing can still affect its quality. The cell structure may be damaged by ice crystals during the freezing process, and after thawing, it may become soft in texture and dull in color. Some water-soluble vitamins in seaweed, such as vitamin B and vitamin C, will be lost with water, and umami substances will gradually decompose. The temperature fluctuation in the freezer compartment of a household refrigerator is significant and cannot completely suppress microbial activity. Long term storage may breed psychrophilic bacteria. In special circumstances, if the appearance of seaweed is normal and the seal is intact, theoretically it can be consumed after high-temperature cooking, but its nutritional value has been significantly reduced. Seaweed may have an increased fishy smell and a soft texture, and some people may experience gastrointestinal discomfort after consuming it. If the packaging is damaged during the freezing process, seaweed can easily absorb refrigerator odors and breed mold, producing harmful substances. Industrialized ready to eat seaweed is usually dehydrated and has essential differences in storage conditions compared to wet seaweed frozen at home.

It is recommended to choose dried products when purchasing seaweed, seal and store in a cool and dry place after opening. If wet seaweed needs to be frozen, it should be consumed as soon as possible and stored for no more than three months. Pay attention to changes in color and odor before consumption, and discard immediately if there is any stickiness or odor. Seaweed can be used as a source of iodine supplementation in daily diet, but attention should be paid to moderate intake to avoid excessive intake that can cause thyroid dysfunction. People with seafood allergies should be cautious when consuming seaweed products.
