Can eggs be cut in half and heated in the microwave

It is generally not recommended to directly heat eggs in the microwave after cutting them in half. Eggs with shells or cut open may burst due to a sudden increase in internal pressure when heated in the microwave, posing a safety hazard. If heating is required, it is recommended to use other safer methods. When eggs are heated in a microwave, the internal moisture quickly vaporizes to produce steam, and the eggshell or semi-solid protein can hinder the release of steam, leading to pressure accumulation. Especially for cut eggs, the exposed yolk and protein structure are more likely to form localized high temperature points, which may cause splashing or explosion. Experiments have shown that even using toothpicks to poke holes in egg yolks is still difficult to completely avoid risks, and high temperatures may also damage the nutritional components of eggs such as vitamin B groups and some protein structures. In special circumstances, if a microwave oven specific container is used and the heating time is strictly controlled, such as 10-15 seconds of intermittent heating, partially cooked cut eggs may be safely heated. But it is necessary to ensure that the egg yolk is completely dispersed, the container has enough space for steam to escape, and after heating, let it stand for 1 minute before removing it. Nevertheless, this method may still affect the taste, causing the egg yolk to dry and harden, and the edges of the protein to appear rubbery.

It is recommended to use the method of heating the sliced eggs separately or reheating them in a steamer, which can evenly heat them and retain their nutrients. In daily diet, when cooking eggs, the heat can be controlled to make soft boiled eggs, which can be consumed directly after refrigeration without the need for secondary heating. Before using a microwave to heat any egg products, be sure to confirm if the packaging has a microwave compatible label and avoid using metal containers or sealed vessels. If you need to quickly heat boiled eggs, you can soak them in hot water for 3-5 minutes, which is safer and tastier than microwave heating.
