Can applying yogurt to the face turn white

Applying yogurt to the face generally does not achieve a significant whitening effect. Lactic acid in yogurt may have a slight softening effect on the stratum corneum of the skin, but cannot change melanin deposition or deep skin tone. Yogurt contains lactic acid, protein, and a small amount of vitamins. When applied externally, lactic acid may help remove aging keratin, making the skin temporarily appear smooth and translucent. But this effect only stays in the epidermal layer, and the concentration is much lower than professional skincare products. Frequent use may damage the skin barrier. Skin color is mainly determined by the activity of melanocytes. Yogurt cannot inhibit tyrosinase activity or block melanin transmission, and is ineffective for pigmentation problems such as melasma and tanning.

Some people feel their skin tone brightens after applying yogurt on their face, which may be related to the temporary promotion of keratin metabolism by lactic acid, but this effect is not long-lasting. The large molecular proteins in yogurt cannot be absorbed by the skin, and spoiled yogurt may also cause contact dermatitis. Sensitive muscles may experience adverse reactions such as stinging and redness, and those with damaged skin barriers need to be more cautious. Improving skin tone requires multiple approaches such as sun protection, antioxidant, and inhibition of melanin. Sunscreen should be consistently used in daily life to avoid UV stimulation and melanin production. Balanced intake of antioxidant nutrients such as vitamin C and vitamin E, and if necessary, use whitening skincare products containing ingredients such as arbutin and niacinamide under the guidance of a doctor. If there is pathological pigmentation, such as melasma or post inflammatory pigmentation, it is recommended to seek medical attention at a dermatologist for laser or medication intervention.
