Blueberries are out of season fruits in February. The natural ripening period of blueberries is concentrated in summer, while off-season blueberries are mainly grown in greenhouses or imported, which may result in nutritional differences and high prices. Blueberries grown outdoors in China usually ripen from June to August, when the fruit has the best flavor and nutritional value. In February, most of the blueberries sold in the market came from greenhouses in Yunnan and other places, and the results were promoted by simulating the summer environment through temperature and humidity control technology. This type of blueberry has a similar appearance to seasonal products, but its sweetness and anthocyanin content may be slightly lower, as insufficient light intensity and accumulated temperature can affect the accumulation of secondary metabolites. Imported blueberries rely on off-season supply from southern hemisphere regions such as Chile, and long-distance transportation requires refrigeration treatment, resulting in partial loss of heat sensitive nutrients such as vitamin C. A very small number of late maturing varieties in high-altitude areas may naturally bear fruit in early spring, but their yield is scarce and difficult to form a market supply. This type of blueberry has a longer growth cycle and smaller fruit size, but the sugar concentration in low temperature environments may result in a richer taste. Regardless of the source of off-season blueberries, their dietary fiber and mineral content are not significantly different from seasonal products, making them a high-quality and healthy snack choice.

When choosing off-season blueberries, it is recommended to observe the integrity of the fruit powder and the freshness of the fruit stem, and avoid purchasing products with sticky skin or water accumulation in the container. Gently rinse with running water during cleaning, excessive rubbing will damage the surface anthocyanins. In winter, it can be used with yogurt to enhance probiotics intake, or to make blueberry oatmeal Congee to improve dietary fiber absorption. Special groups such as diabetes patients should pay attention to the daily intake of less than 100g to avoid excessive sugar intake.
