Will turtles come out of the water when they hear a whistle

Turtles generally do not actively release water when they hear whistling, and this behavior is more influenced by environmental factors and physiological needs. The auditory system of turtles is not sensitive to sound transmitted through the air and mainly relies on vibrations in the water to perceive external movements.

Turtles belong to reptiles, and their auditory structure is simple, mainly receiving low-frequency vibration signals in water through their mandibles. Whistle sound belongs to high-frequency air conduction sound waves, which attenuate significantly in water and are difficult to be effectively captured by turtles. Experimental observations have shown that turtles respond more quickly to sudden changes in water flow or direct stimuli such as food entering the water, while they have almost no response to whistling sounds on the opposite shore. Some breeders mistakenly believe that turtles can understand whistling, but in reality, it is a conditioned reflex formed by whistling before feeding, unrelated to the sound itself. In rare cases, turtles that have been artificially domesticated for a long time may develop conditioned reflexes to whistle at specific frequencies. This training requires hundreds of repetitions to associate whistling with feeding, and is only effective for individuals. Wild turtles or untrained individuals will not emerge from the water as a result. If turtles are found frequently surfacing, priority should be given to checking for abnormal water quality, oxygen content, water temperature, or the presence of health issues such as parasitic infections. When raising turtles in daily life, it is recommended to maintain a stable water temperature of 25-30 degrees Celsius and replace one-third of the water body every week. Feeding should be timed and quantified, and high protein feed such as fish, shrimp, and snail meat should be selected to avoid excessive intake and deterioration of water quality. A sun drying platform can be arranged for turtles to rest, but it is necessary to ensure that the container has an anti escape design. If turtles exhibit abnormal behaviors such as refusing to eat or floating in water, they should consult a marine veterinarian in a timely manner and not rely on sound stimulation to intervene in their natural activity patterns.
