Will normal people lose weight by taking metformin

Metformin is generally not effective for weight loss in normal individuals, and it is not recommended to use it without indications. Metformin is a prescription drug for the treatment of type 2 diabetes. Its weight loss effect is related to improving insulin resistance, and its metabolic effect on non diabetes patients is limited.

The weight loss mechanism of metformin is mainly aimed at the hyperinsulinemia of diabetes patients. Some obese patients with diabetes may lose weight slightly by inhibiting the output of liver sugar and increasing the utilization of glucose in peripheral tissues. However, when the insulin levels of healthy individuals are normal, the regulatory effect of this drug on fat metabolism is weak, and clinical studies have shown that weight changes are not significant. After taking it, gastrointestinal reactions such as nausea and diarrhea may occur, which may actually affect normal nutrient intake.

Very few people without diabetes may have weight loss, which is usually related to drug induced anorexia or indigestion. But this weight loss method may be accompanied by risks such as vitamin B12 deficiency and lactic acidosis. Using medication without a doctor's evaluation may lead to adverse reactions such as hypoglycemia and electrolyte imbalance, especially for those with liver and kidney dysfunction who are at higher risk.

It is recommended to control weight through a balanced diet and regular exercise, maintain 30 minutes of aerobic exercise daily, and increase intake of whole grains, vegetables, and fruits. If medication intervention is required, nationally approved weight loss drugs should be selected under the guidance of an endocrinologist, and self use of hypoglycemic drugs should be avoided. Regularly monitoring changes in body fat percentage and waist circumference and establishing a long-term health management plan is safer and more effective than relying on medication.
