Will eating wax on fruits be toxic

Wax on fruits is usually not toxic to the human body, but it is necessary to distinguish between natural fruit wax and artificial edible wax. The wax on the surface of fruits mainly includes two types: natural wax secreted by the fruit peel itself and artificially added food grade wax. The former is a plant protective layer, while the latter must comply with national food safety standards. The natural wax on the fruit skin is a protective film naturally formed during plant growth, mainly composed of higher fatty acids and alcohol compounds, which can prevent water loss and microbial invasion. This type of wax has a high content in fruits such as apples and plums. After ingestion, it will be broken down and metabolized by the gastrointestinal tract, and will not accumulate or cause harm. Artificial edible wax is commonly used in commercialized fruits such as citrus and apples. Common types include palm wax, cordyceps wax, etc. In China, the usage amount should not exceed 200 milligrams per kilogram. Fruits sold through legitimate channels have residual levels far below the safety limit after cleaning, and will not exceed the standard for normal consumption. Some illegal traders may use industrial paraffin wax for polishing, which contains harmful substances such as polycyclic aromatic hydrocarbons. If fruits treated with industrial wax are ingested by mistake, acute symptoms such as nausea and diarrhea may occur, and long-term intake may increase the risk of cancer. When purchasing, it can be identified by touch: natural wax has a delicate and even touch, while industrial wax often has a sticky feeling and a bright color. It is recommended to clean fruits with warm water and a soft bristled brush, or remove the thick wax skin. Special groups such as pregnant women and children can prioritize organic certified products.

When consuming fruits with wax in daily life, it is recommended to choose regular supermarkets and avoid purchasing products with abnormally bright surfaces or pungent odors. Soaking in salt water or baking soda for ten minutes and then rinsing can effectively remove most of the surface residue. Maintain dietary diversity by alternating between fruits with skin and those without skin, which not only provides nutrients from the skin but also reduces risks. If you experience persistent abdominal pain, vomiting, and other symptoms after ingesting industrial wax, you should seek medical attention promptly for targeted treatment.
