Spraying appropriate concentrations of plant growth regulators or natural germination inhibitors on potatoes can effectively inhibit germination. There are mainly methods such as gibberellin inhibitors, chlorpheniramine, natural peppermint oil, cinnamon extract, hydrogen peroxide, etc.
1. Gibberellin inhibitor
Gibberellin inhibitors delay germination by blocking the endogenous gibberellin signaling pathway in potatoes. This type of substance has no residual toxicity to tubers and is suitable for small-scale storage and use in households. After spraying, it is necessary to maintain a ventilated and dry environment. Be aware that excessive concentration may cause skin wrinkling. It is recommended to conduct small-scale testing first.
Chlorpheniramine
Food grade chlorpheniramine is a commonly used sprout suppressant in commercial warehousing, which can interfere with the synthesis of cytokinins. When using, the dosage should be controlled and sprayed evenly. After treatment, the potatoes should be left to evaporate residue. This method is not applicable to sprouted potatoes, and pregnant women should avoid contact with the treated epidermis.
3. Natural peppermint oil
The menthol component in peppermint oil has a natural antibacterial and bud inhibiting effect. Dilute peppermint oil and water in proportion before spraying, which can both inhibit germination and repel insects. This method is suitable for organic potato cultivation, but it requires repeated spraying every two weeks, and the effect will be weakened in high temperature environments.
4. Cinnamon extract
Cinnamaldehyde can disrupt the membrane structure of bud eye cells and inhibit germination. Cinnamon powder soaking solution can be filtered and sprayed. This natural method has no chemical residues and can prevent fungal infections. The disadvantage is that there is a noticeable odor residue, which may affect the subsequent cooking flavor.
5. Hydrogen peroxide
Low concentration hydrogen peroxide destroys bud and eye activity through oxidation. Spraying diluted with 3% medical hydrogen peroxide can delay germination for 2-3 weeks and has a certain bactericidal effect. Attention should be paid to the fact that high concentrations can corrode the potato skin. After processing, it should be dried before storage.
When storing potatoes, it is recommended to choose a cool and ventilated environment with a temperature of 4-8 degrees Celsius and a relative humidity control of 85% -90%. Potatoes can be stored together with apples or onions, as the ethylene gas released by these foods helps to inhibit germination. Regularly inspect and remove sprouted potatoes to avoid affecting other tubers. Damaged potatoes should be removed before long-term storage, cleaned thoroughly, and then air dried before processing. Store in breathable containers such as bamboo baskets or mesh bags, avoiding the use of sealed plastic bags. If the epidermis turns green or the bud eyes protrude significantly, consumption should be stopped immediately as the content of solanine may increase.
