Which is better for relieving cough, Chuanbei or Zhebei

Both Chuanbei and Zhebei have cough stopping effects, but Chuanbei is more suitable for dry cough without phlegm or Yin deficiency dry cough, while Zhebei is more suitable for phlegm heat cough or external wind heat cough. The choice should be based on the type of cough, physical differences, and specific symptoms.

Chuanbei has a slightly cold nature and belongs to the lung meridian. It is known for moistening the lungs and resolving phlegm, especially suitable for chronic cough with less phlegm and dry and itchy throat caused by lung dryness and yin deficiency. The alkaloids it contains can inhibit the cough center and nourish the lung yin. For the deficiency cough associated with consumptive diseases such as pulmonary tuberculosis and chronic bronchitis, Chuanbei is often combined with snow pear and honey to enhance the lungs moistening effect. But those with spleen and stomach deficiency and cold should use it with caution, as it may cause diarrhea.

Zhebei has a bitter and cold nature, strong heat clearing and dispersing properties, and is often used for hot cough with yellow and viscous phlegm, fever, and sore throat. Its active ingredients can dilate the bronchi and promote sputum discharge. For cough caused by solid heat syndrome such as acute bronchitis and early stage pneumonia, Zhebei is often used together with mulberry bark and almonds. Zhebei is not suitable for long-term use in frail patients, as excessive use may damage the spleen and stomach yang qi.

It is recommended to consult a traditional Chinese medicine practitioner for diagnosis and treatment before use. During coughing, avoid spicy and stimulating foods and keep the air moist. If coughing lasts for more than two weeks or accompanied by symptoms such as hemoptysis and chest pain, seek medical attention promptly to rule out pulmonary organic diseases. Arhat fruit tea or lily Broth of white fungus can be drunk daily to help moisten the lungs.
