What to do if taking weight loss pills causes menstrual irregularities

Menstrual disorders caused by taking weight loss pills can be improved by adjusting medication, supplementing nutrition, psychological regulation, combining traditional Chinese and Western medicine treatment, and regular check ups. Menstrual disorders may be related to factors such as medication interference with endocrine function, sudden weight loss, nutritional deficiencies, hormonal imbalances, or worsening of underlying diseases.

1. Adjust medication

Immediately stop suspected weight loss drugs. Some weight loss drugs contain diuretics, laxatives, or appetite suppressants, such as sibutramine hydrochloride tablets, orlistat capsules, etc., which may directly disrupt the hypothalamic pituitary ovarian axis function. Parents are advised to seek medical attention together. Doctors may prescribe medication such as progesterone capsules or estradiol valerate tablets to regulate the menstrual cycle, and weight loss products with unknown ingredients are prohibited.

2. Supplementing nutrition

Rapid weight loss can lead to insufficient intake of iron, high-quality protein, and essential fatty acids, causing anemic amenorrhea. Add 50 grams of lean meat, 1 egg, and 200 grams of dark vegetables daily. If necessary, use compound ferrous sulfate folate tablets or protein powder supplements under the guidance of a doctor to avoid extreme dieting.

3. Psychological regulation

Weight loss stress may be suppressed by increasing cortisol levels, leading to delayed menstruation. It is recommended that parents help establish a regular daily routine and try stress relieving activities such as mindfulness breathing or yoga. If there is no improvement for 2 weeks, anxiety symptoms should be investigated. Psychological counseling can be used as an auxiliary means.

4. Integrated Traditional Chinese and Western Medicine

The syndrome differentiation of traditional Chinese medicine mostly belongs to deficiency of liver and kidney yin or deficiency of both qi and blood, which can be adjusted with traditional Chinese patent medicines and simple preparations such as Wuji Baifeng Pill and Xiaoyao Pill. Western medicine such as Diqu Progesterone Tablet can be used for short-term reconstruction cycle. It is necessary to avoid self mixing medication and monitor basal body temperature and vaginal bleeding during medication.

5. Regular follow-up

Weight loss drugs may induce potential diseases such as polycystic ovary syndrome or thyroid dysfunction, and gynecological ultrasound, six sex hormone tests, and five thyroid function tests should be reviewed every three months. If there is headache, blurred vision with amenorrhea, alert to the possibility of pituitary adenoma, and additional head MRI is needed.

During the recovery period, maintain 30 minutes of aerobic exercise such as brisk walking or swimming daily to avoid intense exercise that exacerbates energy expenditure. Choose low glycemic index foods such as oats and quinoa for diet, and consume animal liver iron supplements twice a week. Establish a menstrual diary to record changes in the menstrual cycle. If it persists for 3 months without returning to normal, further investigation of endometrial lesions is required. Weight loss should be achieved by combining scientific diet control with exercise, and weight loss products with unknown ingredients should be prohibited.
