What should I do if there is a sudden smell of durian at home

The sudden odor of durian at home can be eliminated by opening windows for ventilation, using activated carbon adsorption, spraying white vinegar water, placing orange peels, and using air purifiers. The odor of durian mainly comes from the volatile substances in the flesh, and the odor molecules are easily attached to the surface of fabrics or furniture.

1. Open windows for ventilation

Immediately open all doors and windows to create convective air, accelerating indoor and outdoor gas exchange. The main component of durian odor is sulfur-containing compounds, which can be quickly diluted by ventilation. Houses facing north and south can have both windows open simultaneously, and it is recommended to maintain ventilation for at least half an hour. High rise residential buildings should pay attention to avoiding items being blown off when the wind is strong.

2. Activated carbon adsorption

Place activated carbon bags or bamboo charcoal products near the odor source, and their porous structure can efficiently adsorb odor molecules. Use 200 grams of activated carbon every 10 square meters and place it in air circulation areas such as sofa crevices and behind curtains. Activated carbon will release adsorbed substances after saturation, and it needs to be exposed to sunlight for 4 hours per month to restore its adsorption capacity.

3. White vinegar water spraying

Mix white vinegar and water in a 1:3 ratio into a spray bottle, and spray evenly on walls and furniture surfaces. Acetic acid can undergo neutralization reaction with sulfides, especially suitable for treating odors that penetrate into textiles. After spraying, let it stand for 15 minutes and then wipe it with a damp cloth to avoid residual vinegar stains. Leather furniture needs to be tested for fading in a small area first.

4. Place citrus peels

Fresh orange peels or grapefruit peels are dispersed and placed in a corner of the room, which contains limonene that can decompose odors. When the oil in the fruit peel evaporates, it produces a fresh odor that covers the durian flavor. The new fruit peel needs to be replaced every 8 hours. This method is suitable for enclosed spaces such as bedrooms, and is more effective when combined with air conditioning dehumidification mode.

5. Air Purifier

Turn on the air purifier with HEPA filter and activated carbon layer, and select the maximum air volume to run for 2 hours. The purifier has a high filtration efficiency for particles larger than 0.3 microns and can remove suspended odor particles. After use, the doors and windows should be closed to maintain a sealed environment, and the filter should be replaced every 3 months according to the frequency of use.

When dealing with the odor of durian, it is recommended to wear a mask to avoid irritating the respiratory tract. Pregnant women and people with allergies should stay away from the treatment site. Long term residual odor may penetrate into wall coatings or wooden furniture, which can be further treated with photocatalyst spray after cleaning. Daily storage of durian requires wrapping it in three layers of plastic wrap and storing it separately in the freezer area of the refrigerator. After consumption, clean the fruit pits and utensils in a timely manner. If the odor is accompanied by a putrid odor or persists, it is necessary to check for compound sources of contamination such as food spoilage or sewer odor.
