What should I do if rice is infested with insects

Rice pests can be treated by freezing insecticides, sun exposure insecticides, Sichuan pepper insecticides, sealed storage, sieve filtration, and other methods. Rice pests are usually caused by factors such as humid storage environment, residual insect eggs in rice bags, suitable temperature for reproduction, outdated rice quality, and inadequate sealing.

1. Freeze insecticidal

Put the raw rice into a sealed bag and freeze it in the freezer for more than 24 hours. Low temperature can effectively kill rice worms and their eggs. After freezing, the rice should be dried and sealed for storage to avoid clumping. This method is suitable for a small amount of rice and does not damage the quality of the rice, but it is necessary to screen out severely damaged rice grains.

2. Sun exposure insect repellent

On sunny days, spread the rice thinly in a clean container and expose it to sunlight for 3-4 hours. Ultraviolet radiation can drive away live insects. Be careful to avoid direct sunlight at noon, which may cause rice grains to crack. After sun exposure, they should be thoroughly cooled before sealing. This method is suitable for situations with low insect populations, but it cannot kill the eggs and requires other measures to be taken in conjunction.

3. Sichuan pepper pest control

Dry Sichuan pepper is stored in a gauze bag mixed with rice, and its volatile substances can repel pests such as rice weevils. Place 10 grams of Sichuan peppercorns every 5 kilograms of rice and replace them once a month. This method is a preventive measure, and live insects should be removed from rice that has already been infected before use.

4. Sealed storage

Transfer the rice to a food grade sealed bucket or vacuum bag to isolate it from air and moisture, which can inhibit the hatching of insect eggs. It is recommended to use containers with silicone sealing rings and store them in a cool and dry place. This method requires ensuring that there are no live insect residues in the container, otherwise pest infestations may recur.

5. Screen filtration

Use a 20-40 mesh screen to repeatedly screen out rice pests and hollow rice grains. After screening, the rice needs to be steamed at high temperature before consumption. The screening process should be carried out outdoors to avoid the spread of the insect body. This method is suitable for situations where there are a large number of insects but the quality of the rice is still good, and it is important to thoroughly clean the screening equipment.

To prevent rice pests, it is necessary to maintain a dry and ventilated storage environment with a relative humidity below 65%. Newly purchased rice can be frozen before storage to avoid mixing with aged rice. It is recommended to use vacuum packed rice and consume it as soon as possible after opening. Regularly inspect the corners of the rice bucket and promptly deal with any insect traces found. If the pest infestation is severe or the rice has become moldy, it should be stopped from consumption to ensure safety. Food grade desiccants can be placed in rice barrels on a daily basis, but direct contact with rice grains should be avoided.
